Default looking for windshield protection

My dad and I are on our 3rd windshields replacement and we're really tired to spend 600$ for a replacement.

Where can i get some sort of film to put on the windshield to protect it.

like in the F1 with their tear off visor....

thx in advance

I tried ClearPlex, supposedly invincible windshield protection. If your ClearPlex is installed by an "authorized/trained" ClearPlex installer, they will warranty your windshield. Sounds pretty good, but "authorized/trained" installers are 4 hours for me. With this in mind I went with an unauthorized installer....wouldn't you know it, I go to the track and get a big rock crack in my windshield...looks like I should have gone to a "authorized/trained" installer. Note, whomever installs it, you'll het a rainbow effect when you have sun glasses on, rather annoying.

So next I went to my local window tinting place...they agree to install regular interior tint on my windshield. It prevents sand and grit etching, but provides minimal rock protection, BUT, it's cheap. I believe a ClearPlex installation time and materials may run $400, the cheap tint is at least half that...I used to get it done for $100. Can't find that guy now. Note regular cheap tint also gives a rainbow view with sun glasses....not such a big deal because with tint, you may not need sun glasses. Hope this helps.

I'm on my 2nd ClearPlex film. It's thick and does a great job of protection. They do, however, take a beating and become hard to see out of after a while. "While" is relative but I finally replaced mine after 2 years (32-37 track days per year). I say "finally" because it should've been replaced prior to that..

I never got rainbow effects with my films but I have transition lenses. The only issue is installation. I installed them myself and well.... you can tell. Doesn't really bother me as I'm not going for Concours or C&C awards. I'd imagine self-install should be fine for race cars.

p.s. BTW thanks, Doug. I may look into the tear-offs.

Might be worth it to get a lexan screen from someone like "Shields". It won't break like glass but after a while it will get pitted.

I feel your pain. A while back we broke 2 windshield in the same day! 1 cone victim and one rock. Had the guys come out and replace them at the track between sessions.

I looked at the clearplex as well and was also told you can't run the wipers or it will scratch. A possible concern especially for those who don't have a dedicated track car.

.... though come to think of it, my last film had areas where it almost looked like it had clear large tire/clag marks that wouldn't come off with cleaning.... so I guess those may have been scratch marks from windshield wipers.

I bought a 4mil thick safety film from Amazon about $30-$40 and installed it myself. I bought an 8 mil sheet that I am using next.

Use a plastic razor blade for trimming.

I've used the Protint tear offs and self installed. Good product.

I'm curious. What exact film did you order from Amazon? Can you comment on the optics, quality, install, etc?

8mil Security Window Film 30" Wide x 6.5 ft. Roll ~$35.00 including shipping.

The optics are pretty good. You need to wait a few days for the film to adhere properly to the windshield for the best clarity.

Very interesting, my windshield broke from a rock at my last track day.

Can it be removed easily?
