Actually according to the Orlando Sentinel, the student was driving and the instructor was the one killed. He was the GM of the operation according to the article. And to add irony to the story is that this track is scheduled to be leveled shortly to make room for more parking at Disney.

Looking at the photos online, it looks as though the car struck the end cap of the guardrail and it breached the passenger side of the car. Absolutely horrible. RIP Gary Terry.

That looks like a poorly designed guardrail system....I'm not a track designer but should there be an exposed end cap like that for cars traveling towards that guardrail?

Tragic, RIP.
A similar incident with an end cap almost happened at IndyCar NOLA on the front straight, but for the random luck of rotational spin, the rear of the gearbox impacted and not a side impact. At the moment it happened I thought how can a guardrail end cap be exposed like that on a new Indy Car track.
Be safe out there.

As a CI at HPDEs I would like to use this as a teaching point at our next instructor's meeting. We don't know exactly what happened in this case, but what could the instructor have done to prevent this? The Lambo is a powerful car and if the driver jumped on the throttle too much, things could have happened too fast for the instructor to intervene.
Thoughts?

Stuff happens. Perhaps the instructor could have done something to prevent such a horrible outcome. Who knows? It's hard to react fast enough as an instructor when things start going out of control. I think Disney is the one that should have done something differently by not having a guardrail there.
