peter...do you think that someone can survive a 130mph to 0 crash in about 16 feet? I would say the reports are incorrect. I don't have the G numbers, but I would say that the speed would have to be a heck of a lot less to survive.
Just like the the crash at COTA. impact was far less than 130+mph.

130km/h (80mph) would be 133g, not survivable (Mythbusters use 100g as their survivability threshold).
45mph would be 41g, just about survivable.
100g in 16ft would give you 70mph

^ Yes, video is still up.
The recovery vehicle should never have been on that side of the wall in the first place.
They should have used the cranes they now use at Monaco if access was an issue.
Either way safety car should be out whenever anything heavy is on the track side of the safer barrier, assuming that's what they use at Suzuka.
That's what they do in Indy car and no one's ever lifted a Caterpillar sideways.

I know it has been said by many before in the thread... but I agree that a safety car was absolutely required once the recovery vehicle was out on track.
Different story if it is just marshals pushing a car behind the barriers, that can be controlled by a local yellow. I hope the FIA doesn't overreact and now use the safety car for everything. The balance was right... this was an error in judgment.
I just don't want FIA races turned into NASCAR where a full course yellow/safety car comes out because a driver dropped a glove on the track. That's nonsense...

I think you guys are underestimating the abilty of these F1 cars to protect the drivers. The one that stands out the most in my mind is Allan McNish hitting a support beam on the armco, ironically, at Suzuka at 300 kph or 188 MPH. He backed in rather than go nose first, but walked away (78g impact). After doing a little searching, it seems that there have been a few at 78 and 75 gs.

Here's the data cast showing Bianchi doing in the neighborhood of 200km/h. Yes it shows a drop right at the end but honestly the resolution is too crappy for that to be a definite change. Any way you cut it there is no way he was doing 45ish.
My guess is that he was doing 200+ through there like everyone else. Once he lost traction there really wasn't any way for him to get it slowed down much at all. So I'm gonna go with the impact speed north of 100mph.

Then when he's presumably going off track, it shows the speed decreasing rapidly until about 95km/h, when it drops precipitously. I'd guess that's the impact. So impact at about 95km/h or a bit less. 95km/h is 60mph. I still think 45mph is about right.

It shows he was doing 225 at that point the lap before, and about 203 when he got to that point the next lap. Is 20km/h enough of a lift for a double waving yellow?

45mph? Doubtful. You don't lose control at 200km/h and slow it down in the wet across grass and access road to 100km/h. If you have that much control you stay on course. The step downs in speed are artifact of how it's shown on the screen.

So sad to see a promising young man struck down like this. Despite all the safety advances, this is still a very dangerous sport. Perhaps a miracle will happen.
