Race car choice for only 2 or 3 races per year
I sold my Spec Boxster at the end of last year thinking I was done racing but I feel the tug to drag me back in. Issue is I will only be racing 2 or 3 times per year with only 1 or 2 practice days on non-race weekends. Any thoughts on what car to get? I have run Spec Boxster, Spec Miata and a short stint in a 996 cup in the past. Either of the spec cars will likely require me to build a car as my head hits the cage in both of those without a special cage design. In the cup I fit fine as long as I throw out the bottom seat cushion.
Pros and cons to all three and on any given day I am inclined to get a different one. Likely won't make a move on one for a few months as I am finishing a major house project now and will not dive back into this until that is over but would like to get a plan together so I can be on the lookout for either a donor car or a clean attractivly priced 996 cup.

Wouldn't this fit the bill? Already completely dialed in and fits nicely between an SPB and Cup car in terms of speed/fun factor.

I have thought about renting but have a fear, perhaps unfounded, that some little thing will happen and I will get a huge bill from the owner. Glen, with the cup I am wondering if jumping into the car intermittently will result in me being a bit wild in the car. Perhaps the impact of limited seat time is the same regardless of what you drive.

Carl Amond also has a great spb he wants to sell with 0 hour motor and accusump and blah blah=all the stuff you can do.
We can solve the driving part easily with some coaching, I can help you or obviously many others from Darren law up and down the scale. Feel free to come drive if you want. You can check it out and I won't send you a huge bill unless you have a huge screw up...

E class 911's are cheap and plentiful.
I know of one in MN that is asking 19K and this one here. I am not affiliated to either.

1. Rent spec racer Ford or SM. Easy.
2. Call Moses Smith at Texas Autosports about a Formula Mazda. Completely different from anything else you've raced and huge fun. They're an old, relatively crude design, and fastest when driven at big slip angles. Big plus is the manufacturer and full support is in your backyard in Cresson. Quicker than a 997 cup most tracks and less than $25K for a good car with some spares

The heck with the 911's in E Class. Grab one of the 944S2's that are out there for an E class ride. Dan Martinson's is for sale. He drove it to three podiums at Road Atlanta and is now moving on to his GTB1 Cayman. Dan and the guy's at Auto Edge in MN have this car very well sorted.
