Airless Tires Coming Soon

Developed by Resilient Tech for the Military, then embraced by Michelin and due soon on the market. No more blowouts, air compressors, spare tires, roadside service.

Made in South Carolina. Look for them in August.

Looks like a nightmare to keep debris out and keep them balanced at speed.

Around for a while now (depending on your application): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tweel

How many heat cycles you think they will get :)

Interesting. That's a look that will take some getting used to.

Could be easily addressed with a lightweight deformable rubber "sidewall". Wouldn't need to be structural at all - kinda like a CV boot. Would also help market adoption by giving them a more familiar look.

Either way though... they've been around for a while, and until they handle NVH and rolling resistance as well as radial tires, they'll never get anywhere in the market.

I want a set for my jeep today. Anyone have a contact.

so what's the downside to this tire? if it's so good, it'll probably be $$$

Michelin was the first tire manufacturer to announce an airless tire in 2005, the so-called 'Tweel'. Others have followed since and Resilient made their announcement in 2008. None of the airless tire design are commercially available today, at least not for passenger cars. In October 2012, Michelin did launch a version of their Tweel which is aimed at the skid steer market.

The major technical hurdles in putting any of the current non-pneumatic tire designs on passenger cars are noise and vibration at high speeds, not rolling resistance. At lot of useful information on airless tires is found here.
