Default Cage This in a 944

I know people like looking at roll cage pictures... I'm currently putting a cage into a 944. Cage This in Boston made the cage as a kit for me. Bill does excellent work and I highly recommend him.

All of the tubes are pre-bent, most are notched, but some he left long for me to notch and fit.

Very cool Van! More details on this machine please, looks vintage and cool, my two requirements for great garage machinery!

That's a Bridgeport vertical milling machine.

It's heavy and ancient! I picked it up from a machine shop going out of business; I also got a lathe, but that's not nearly as old.

Very cool!!! Not that the 944 and cage aren't great too, but I'm always interested to see the neat tools everyone uses. Seems like rennlist should have a tool sub-forum, but I guess the garagejournal has that covered.

A lot of nice triangulation, gussets, and fabrication there. My only concern from a first glance is the the main hoop diagonal, doesn't reach far enough to the driver's side to make a node with the other tube junctions, or fully triangulate the main hoop.

Eric, you're right on that main hoop diagonal... Bill told me he kept it that way so there's room to move the seat back (for tall drivers). I'm unsure what the right answer is...

Here's another picture that shows it better.

There are smarter minds than mine on RL to give you a better opinion. At least you have a reason for making it the way it is. The only thing I would say is build the car for you, not some future owner. If you don't need the room at your height, I'd fix it, and probably complete the harness bar across both sides as well.

I do really like the sill bar that you have - I may copy that design to add on a tube, as I feel my hips are a bit vulnerable now.

The driver's side harness bar is also bowed back to make room for the tall drivers. (It's laying across the back seat in one of those pictures.)

I'm building this car for ChumpCar - and we have two very tall fellows on the team. So I think we'll need that clearance.

Van, Great to hear you're joining the Chumps! We're always looking for other P-cars to run with (as opposed to all the BMW's). Hopefully you guys will make a race in the central region!

Very cool Michael! I've signed up for the Watkins Glen race in April. I'm unsure what other races we'll do... or if we'll get that far west...
