Have to disagree with J Richard. We still get 2 full weekends (5-6 days) out of a set of 4/32" shaved
RA1s on the SPEC 944. We run them until cord shows with ZERO lap time fall off. I can't do that with the Hoosier's on my 911 and can't think of any other R coumpound that will run to cords (and last 2 full weekends). I do agree that they don't last as well as they did a fwe years ago we used to get 3 + plus weekends. Still a damn good tire. Sounds better than 3-4 heat cycles and then they come apart on the track.

I just received this from TOYO: TireRack, so far denies they've actually heard of a problem and asked for pictures, which I will send them tonight as soon as I take them.

Comments/Questions:

I have had a delamination failure on 2 of four Toyo RRs on their 2nd heat cycle. I purchased these from TireRack about 3 weeks ago. I understand this is a common problem and would like to know what Toyo is doing to reimburse users of these tires for the cost of the tires, transportation, mounting and balancing.

Thanks for your help,

John

I was skeptical as well, but after having a post tsunami shaved sets fall way off after 16hc I was surprised. I asked my toyo guy what the deal was and he said that the new compound has significantly less silica due to new California EPA requirements. He said the silica content is what determines the durability of the tire and we have the tree huggers to thank for this. Ultimately it will be affecting all tires compounds...anyway what I've been told...

Newer RA1 does heat cycle out before cording now vs old days. Confirmed between a lot of us spec racers.

FWIW, the Nitto NT01 is a better tire and TOYO owns them. Wish they would use the Nittos in spec

New RA1 sucks except when brand new. NT01 is very good, however.

I will ask if he took a picture. It sounds like Toyo isn't going to do anything for those who mounted the tires before their supposed fix. I'm still not sure I understand how to mount them even now.

Thanks for the information. Do you know how to get replacements. Is it through TireRack? What do we do if the next ones have the same problem? It appears that some tires mounted properly have failed. I'm not too happy with the description of it as a cosmetic failure.

I mis-understood my friend, the entire tread didn't come off, but a significant chunk came out of it. Not exactly what I want my race tires to do.

Thanks John - I will pass it on.

I asked tonight wether the drive wheels recommendations apply to low HP cars (we don't spin tires much, at least with an LSD!). The answer is definitely yes, they do apply to all cars.

I am also told the recommendations are expected to be permanent, though research and testing into this issue remains very active/ongoing.
