I agree $42 dollars is nothing for a transponder that should last you several years and probably that many events.
I'd say we are lucky they don't charge a monthly fee to have access to our results, heck you can get them at the track from the organizer. They could make a killing on that.
The cost of a new AMB transponder is ridiculous though.
