Buy...
Van's wheels.....nothing prettier than factory hollow spokes.
If you are a cheap bas@#rd as I am, and don't want to spend $5,000 for a set of wheels, here is what I recommend:
1. Get a set of Sport 4 wheels from Tire rack, 7 1/2" front, 9" rear X 17". These wheels are a little heavy, about the same weight as stock wheels, but they are light on your wallet ay about $700 a set. Tire Rack says they now have these wheels available in 18"...see below for specifics. They are made in China. Note I have two sets of the 17" Sport 4 and they have been great.
2. Look into Tire Rack's OZ wheels...cost a little more, available in 18" and a lot lighter, about $400 a wheel, 2X the Sport 4.
3. Take some of that saved money and buy a good data logger. This way you can get the most out of those new wheels.
Front Fitment
18x8
$179 (each)
Offset: 54mm
Backspacing: 6.61"
Bolt Pattern: 5-130
Rec. Tire Size:225/40-18
Weight: 24.6lbs.
Important Notes
Est. Availability: In Stock
Rear Fitment
18x10
$189 (each)
Offset: 58mm
Backspacing: 7.79"
Bolt Pattern: 5-130
Rec. Tire Size:265/35-18
Weight: 27.2lbs.
Important Notes
Est. Availability: In Stock

I ordered CCW SP 20 8.5 and 10 by 18 for 993 per earlier discussion and Bill's post. The car came with 8 and 10 Kinesis.
If you are going new, it is hard to beat CCW quality and the price.
Shameless plug, I have 2 sets of MY02 and 1 set of NB 993 twists which I have to confirm are hallow. I would like to sell 1 set MY02 (near perfect), Kinesis, and twists to fund another set of CCW. Let me know if you want to go used.

Well, the OZ would be ideal in an 8.5. Bill has pretty adamantly touted the value of an 8.5" up front for track duty, so I'm trying to find a set sub $2500. The CCW and Forgeline look great, but $3k and $4k + for those respectively sort of hurts when I'm also trying to get a street wheel.
I thought about just going big and getting Speedlines and just running a single set of wheels/tires for street/track, but I run the track tires so far past the wear bars it wouldn't be safe on the street in the rain...

I run Team Dynamics wheels (18X8.5 and 10) on my track car. They are not as light as the Forgeline and similar wheels, but they are a very tough and well made wheel. they are the spec wheel in British Touring Car. They are well within your budget. I know Racer's Edge sells them, not sure who else. They'll likely be drop shipped so it probably won't matter.

Do not....
...consider the MY 2002 996 wheels as track wheels. They are great street wheels, but potentially too susceptible to bending on the track. Of course you won't have any problems if you refrain from off course excursions. I was able to do that but knew a number of folks that couldn't keep their car on the track, and or, hit some pot holes, and voila, a bent wheel.
At $1,200 a set used, they are tempting, don't let the "Cheap Devil" suck you in.
For bargain wheels, the OZ wheels seem like the best value, IMHO. If I had oodles of cash to spend, I'd go Forgeline, or Ray. Listen to Bill, he knows of what he speaks.
I consider myself very knowledgable about MY 2002 996 wheels. They are very seductive, looks so good, great pedigree being made by BBS and very light. They are available pretty cheap at around $1,200 a set. I sold a perfect set to Bobby T. for $1,100...straight and true and refinished. Damn what a deal. He wanted them for the street.
I have had at least 3 sets, buy the originals from Porsche in 2002 for about $750 a set, what a deal.
