Brake Controllers

Tekonsha Prodigy 2. Some minor improvements over the 1st generation.
Whatever you do DO NOT buy a time based controller (the cheapo ones). The inertia controllers are much better but the Prodigy 2 is among the best. We put on 100+ a year.

Integrated
Why all mfgrs don't just do integrated controllers with a tow package is beyond me. As good as the prodigy is it still sucks to have a screw on gizmo hanging under the dash or finding a good hole to put it in. The tundra was prewired but had very few options for placement. I customized one of the dash pockets doesn't look too bad but nothing as nice as the new fords. Your truck/open trailer should be fine with the right tongue weight/balance and a good brake setup.

Rick,
Totally agree. Just traded my Tundra for an F250 after a scary brake moment with the Tundra, which was great in all ways except braking while towing. Liked the Prodigy, but the integrated unit on the F250 is also excellent...of course, the F250 might be the real difference.

Agree with everyone. My most popular at my trailer ship is the Prodigy P2 http://www.etrailer.com/Brake-Contro...sha/90885.html and the Prodigy P3 http://www.etrailer.com/Brake-Contro...sha/90195.html

we all agree that the Prodigy is the best ELECTRONIC brake controller but there is another option if you want the ultimate in trailer brake control and safety. Better than the Prodigy and any of the integrated trailer brakes...I am using this on my Dodge 3500 that tows over 18,000 lbs....it is really awesome. no affiliation, just a happy customer.

Excellent:
I did some research and I thought long and hard about the Tekonsha Prodigy RF. I would still need to buy a 7 pin plug and harness/braket/adapter even though my truck has a 4 pin set-up with the class III hitch.
When it was all said and done, the Prodigy P2 is in-bound with a full harness/bracket adapter kit.
Again, thankx guys you are great and I sincerely appereciate the experience/info in here.

Main thing is to get a proportional controller. They cost more but are much more controllable and even. Cheaper controllers use a timer circuit for applying more brakes rather than an accelerometer to brake in proportion to the tow vehicle.
