Let me take a stab at what might be some of the reasons.
1) Mandatory use of Paypal. No checks, no money orders, no anything else. I personally loathe Paypal.
2) Loss of 1/2 your money($225) after sept 10th if you cancel
3) Loss of all your money( $450) if you cancel after Sept 25. I believe it was originally the 16th but they changed it.
These are some of the most unfriendly registration policies I've encountered in a long time.
Generally an organization will charge a nominal administrative charge ($25-50) if you cancel out of a race....but $250-$450 seems a bit on the unconscionable side to me.
This race has been in trouble before. I'd think the organizers would want to make it easier and less cumbersome to participate and certainly less penal if you need to cancel.
