SOUTH COURSE NOTES (copied off the web somewhere, a pretty decent beginning line….)

S1 and S2 are taken as close as possible as one sweeping
turn in 3rd gear. It is best to be near the end of the outside
curb (drivers left) for a turn-in point for turn S2. Apex S2
late and control speed enough to allow the car to start S3
(left hander) from the far right side of the pavement.

Note that S3 is one of the most unforgiving corners of
both tracks, with guard rail on both sides of the corner exit.
There are several ways to easily run out of road at the exit
of S3, resulting in problems if not recognized early: 1)
turning in too early, 2) turning in too late, 3) trying to take
corner too fast or 4) not using the full track (on right) at
the turn-in point. Skiers would refer to S3 as a “triple black
diamond”; not for it’s difficulty, but for it’s Risk. Give S3
your highest respect.

You might have to shift to 4th between S3 and S4. S4 is
fast left hander and straightforward. It could probably be
taken in either 3rd or 4th gear. A late apex is preferable.
S5 is a difficult to see left hander. An early apex, allows
for good speed, but with increasing risk of off course at
the exit. Third gear would be the desirable gear, but 4th
will work well.

S6 is deceiving, in that it appears to be a double apex
right hander, but only has one apex (the last portion, with
curbing on the right). The approach should be somewhat
of a wide arc, turning in toward the apex, around the #1
marker. This exit is important, since it leads onto two
straights, connected by a right hand “kink” (S7) which can
be taken flat, if the turn-in point is correct and taken
smoothly.

S8 is a straightforward right hander, but wants a slightly
later apex, since it is a little more than a 90 Degree corner.
S9 (“Patience”) is a right hander which can be taken a lot
faster than is desirable. It precedes one of the most
important corners on the track (S10) which is about a 110
degree left hand turn.

A late apex in S10 is best, where it is important to get a
good exit speed onto the longest straightaway. The
minimum speed at the center of the S10 corner is only
about 45 MPH.

At the end of the straight, the right hand S11 has a hard
breaking approach from the highest speed to the lowest
speed of the circuit. The corner is faster than it appears,
since it does NOT require exiting to the extreme right side
of the road, in order to set up for the left hand turn, S12.
S12 is only about a 45 degree corner, and it is approached
at a relatively low speed out of S11. However, a fast exit
out of S11 is important, since it leads onto another long
straight. Half way down the straight out of S12, is “link 2”,
transitioning to the North Track. There is a longitudinal
seam and change in slope of the road surface, where the
North Track is entered. Since the transition is progressively
more abrupt to the right side of the road, it is better to stay
left, in that area.
