Suction mounts on the windshield?
 

I've read that some groups won't allow people to have cameras suction cup mounted on their cars; does anyone know if that is the case even if the mount is tethered to a solid part of the car with safety wire? The mount I have has a lever to generate suction, so I really doubt that it would fall off, but I figure the safety wire should prevent it from really going anywhere should the mount fail.

To provide some background, I just got Harry's lap timer for my iPhone, and I would like to use it to get some video and data at the NNJR DE event this weekend.

I ran behind two corvettes a month back at a DE, fast cars on the straights. The problem was they had them mounted on the roof. When I came up behind them I was thinking I hope that camera does not fall off because it will put a big hole in my fiberglass, or shatter my windshield and ruin my weekend. I for some reason wanted them to fall off because what idiot suction cups a camera to there roof hitting 140 on the straights. The region we were with saw this and asked them to take them off the roofs. I am fine with it inside the car, just don't make it somebody else's problem. If they are suctioned cupped inside with a tether I do not see a problem with it.

I too saw this done just last weekend. I'm not comfortable with it for all the reasons above.

NNJR allows the use of a suction cup for cameras (inside the car only), but it is up to the Track Tech guys if yours is securely mounted or not. This will be judged while going through the tech line each day. It comes down to the size/wt. of camera versus size etc.. of suction cup.

the inside car only rule makes sense but the gopro suction mounts can easily take +190mph with no problem as long as they are mounted correctly... guess that discourages "racing" at DEs

I'm actually a little surprised that the DE tech folks are OK with suction cup attachment in the cockpit. Probably will hold up under most circumstances, but how about in an accident? I'd think the camera could become a projectile at just the wrong moment.
