That BLOWS! Seems like he's towing with a BMW 5-series wagon or something. Poor guy, I hope he wasn't hurt.

Some gas on the car, and activate the trailer brakes (and maybe a prayer?).

It happened once to me and before ending up like this guy, I did put some gas in and when it stabilized, I just slowed down.

Result of not enough tongue weight (in my case).

Came close once. Combination of insufficient tongue weight, which started it a little, and sticky trailer brakes on one side. Hitting the trailer brakes only really got the trailer going. Short wheelbase tow vehicle did not help. I ended up coasting to a stop and disconnecting the brakes (and moving up the car). Incredibly scary moment.

How bout the comments from the videographers:

It actually sounded to me like he was trying to say "cool".

What to do when this happens? Slight acceleration + activate trailer brakes via your brake controller device.

Wow, that went way out of control pretty quickly. I wonder if some combination of incorrect tongue weight, and maybe even high center of gravity contributed to that unfortunate incident.

I've been told hit the trailer brakes using the manual override on the controller. I used to have a minor version of this happen with my old tow vehicle, and the trailer brake trick worked. Not sure if it would have helped the guy in the video - it would have required quick presence of mind.

Like VR (and others) said.
And - DON'T LIFT! Squeeze on the brake controller, don't 'hit it.'
And get a real tow vehicle before this happens to you.

Ended up looking up the hill after a corner in the right side ditch at 7AM. Truck was 4K damaged, the enclosed tag trailer was twisted and written off, but the 911 was tied down well and was only minor $200. damaged. It happened quick and I just didn't react fast enough. Oh, did I mention the first vehicle I saw after the rig stopped with a couple feet of truck in the road was a loaded fuel tanker in the right lane going 50-60? Luckily he was paying attention and moved to the left lane. Since then,150000 miles with a 5th wheel and no problems.

What do you do if you have surge brakes, and therefore, no way to directly activate the trailer's brakes? I assume you just speed up. Is that correct?

Yes, but its very, very difficult to force yourself to do so.

Then clean yer britches and correct the issue which caused it.
