ON TOP OF THE FREAKING MOTOR!!!.. Yes that finned aluminum thing in the middle of the engine plastics is the ECU. What was Mercedes thinking??? Maybe install in exhaust pipe next time to be closer to 02 sensor?

Knowledge-transfer from the Chrysler side of the merger, clearly. Think of all the money they saved with shorter wiring runs between the engine and the ECU.

Genius, I tell you. Genius!

I believe that's the subwoofer amp. The ECU is in the fuel tank, which is under the front bumper cover. At least they didn't put the motor behind the drive wheels, that would be completely moronic.

Mercedes is not perfect, but I've owned two (still own one) and they rarely misstep on engineering issues. Pretty bulletproof (if uninspiring) equipment.

I think you're letting the Krauts off way too easy

I think they borrowed that idea from 1970's Jaguar V12 engines. There were so many Jags with melted ignition modules that at one time there was a 6 month+ wait.

lets see, electronics worst enemies are heat and vibration. Lets mount it on top of the engine.

That is an odd place to locate the ECU I must say.

This is the ECU, for MTU diesels, note the high tech spring arrangement

That engine color matches your car quite nicely ... have you considered putting one in?

is that a diesel?

If not, could they put the ECU closer to the electromagnetic interference from the spark plugs?!

hopefully MB's are not following the Italian tradition, I watched my roommates Maz bi-turbo burn to the ground in college. Current MB's may no longer have the pullman standard but for me they are good to go.
