Default Cosmoline- on or off ?

I've asked my tech a couple of times about this stuff and he says to leave it on for the protection. I've read others think it's best to remove it because it holds heat in the engine. What do you guys say?

i dont have any direct advice to give you about your track car; but way back when i used to uncrate and assemble Kubota tractors (college summer job). they came off the boat COVERED in cosmoline; pretty much the entire tractor and all its parts.... they were well protected and there was no rust, even considering the long boat ride. one of my jobs was to clean off the entire tractor; that stuff was really gummy and yucky. to clean it we used raw diesel fuel first, with brushes and rags. and then we'd steam clean the entire tractor, and then wash by hand. certain customers and/or model tractors got a coat of wax, too.

i never remember letting a tractor leave our shop without having the cosmo cleaned off it....

My personal belief is to keep it on for a road car, and take it off for a track car. Cars that see extensive salt in the winter would do better with cosmoline on the undercarriage in my opinion...

Your car has rust protection anyway.... so no harm taking it off if you worry about overheating in summer...

Can't possibly imagine that it could cause overheating. It would have to be really thick to become a heat barrier IMHO. Daily driven street cars that have it cleaned off usually have a lot of pitting on the case & trans. If you leave it on though, after a number of years it bakes on tight and is near impossible to get off.

I think Todd alluded to what Cosmoline is actually used for (it is not undercoating). It is merely supposed to be put onto all the exposed metal/alum parts that could corrode on the boat ride across the pond. I may be wrong but the application on Porsche is only for vehicles taking the boat trip.

Happy New Year!

Stoners Xenit is an excellent choice for safe Cosmoline removal.

There have been group buys on it over in the 993 forum...one of the forum regulars works for Stoners IIRC, along with some beautiful pictures of immaculate undercarriages.

Does not matter one bit one way or the other. Bigger picture things to expend effort on.

If it's not a major heat retainer I think I'll just leave it on for the corrosion protection.
