Toyo RA1 335/30/18 faillure
What could cause this? Or is it a defect?
I ran it only 4 sessions before I noticed it when I came home. Other 3 tires all OK.
45 - 65F sunny weather, cold temp +/-28/32 Hot 40/44. I overshot temps a few times not bleeding enough as the track warmed up..

I had a R888 do this 2 weekends ago. I sent pics to Toyo and they sent a call tag to look at the tire.

that is wierd. I dont think anyone has gone through (not used) as many 305/335s, as I have, and I have never seen anything like this, in fact, ive never seen any cracking, or issues with the tire. (like you see sometimes with hoosiers, or other brands with cracking at the shoulders, tread coming off at the edges, etc. ) This certainly looks like a cut, and so does the r888. you wouldnt think rubber would fail like that if it was a manufacturing defect or material flaw.

Nah, it looks like the tire came apart where the tread wrapped around and the ends met -- notice the nice straight edge. Definitely a tire defect.
Tires are so odd because unlike every other part on our cars they are difficult to fully inspect. They are laminates and you never really know what is going on inside.
That all said, Toyo will say you had too much air, overheated the tire, and then the center got so much abuse that the laminate gave up.

Any chance you put one or more wheels off the track during any of your sessions? Sometimes going from pavement to grass/dirt at speed will cause a tire to gouge/cut.

Trakcar, can you take a picture of the sidewall the exact same way you took to other two pictures? I am trying to determine if that is what the tread molded together?

Thanks for the additional picture.
After having about five different people here at my office inpect the pictures and actually pulling one of the tires off the shelf to closely look at it and without physically looking at the damaged tire we had a consensus that there had to be something small in the road that you ran over accidently, causing a small cut in the tread. It looks like it was just deep enough to get to the Nylon belt. When you kept driving on the tire it developed a small void underneath the tread and with enough revolutions it finally just pulled right off.
The only way to be 100% is to let Toyo take a look at it and determine what could have caused it.
I hope this helps.
Give me a call if you would like to replace it, I am sure I can cut a little off the price for you.
