Interesting Alternative to Mirrors

I think that the driver should be able to use whatever he wants. Night-vision goggles have lousy depth perception, but you get use to it, and use other cues. I think the rear view camera would just take getting use to. A heads-up display might be cool.
Geo, I remember that targa/mirror incident. The techs just looked at it, and said, "right, take it off" and that was the end of the discussion.

While it is a neat idea (and could make some cool videos), it's really just over-complicating things and introducing additional points of failure, as well as substantial expense, for little to no gain over standard mirrors.

On another note, how many of us actually had those X 1/9's ?? Good times (and bad) I had one and drove it from NH to TX to start graduate school. I figured it would take 3 days...it took 3 weeks. Needless to say I didn't get off on the right foot with my advisor...

I think it sounds interesting Frank. Like to see it when it's done. I find the rear vision mirror in 944 turbos to be too far over and feel like I have to twist my head away from forward to use it properly. I'm sure that if the system was good the driver would get used to it very quickly.

From a guy who has spent the better part of the last 10 years driving cars with near zero rear visibility...
Side view mirrors are far more important to see what is going on with a battle behind you. The camera seems valuable in a mixed class race when you are in the slower car - you can see an approaching car much better when the closing speed is high.
BTW - With side mirrors only, I like curved mirrors on both side. The covers as much of the rear as possible. Also, check the mirrors in a corner and you can see someone tucked directly behind you. Takes some getting used to, but it works and I have never turned in on someone. But again, if I were 10 seconds a lap slower than another class, I can see how the camera is very valuable if rear view mirror is blocked, or does not exist.

Late to the party on this one. I think this is a great idea, within the constraints of failure-prone electronics. I guess my main concern, however, is with a console-mounted view screen. That means looking downward in a separate motion from scanning your gauges, and would be unsafe & damned near impossible in a corner...whereas side mirrors in most race cars are more or less parallel to your heads-up lateral line of sight...and it is really easy to use peripheral vision to pick up motion in the side mirrors in a corner, so as to not chop a vehicle that has suddenly appeared there. I rarely will LOOK at a side mirror, but rather peripherally SCAN it to look for color & motion.

But, I have to say that this one's pretty creative.

I think that's legit. The outboard mounted side mirrors are there for aero trim. The farther you mount the mirror away from the driver, the less the driver can see. Mounting the mirrors outboard get around some of the aero rules.

It has been done before, guy in the 928 forum did just that to a custom street car with three camera's built into the body.
In the aftermarket tuning world it's quite commonplace.
If you are asking why not before on a race car......I have no idea
