Last time I checked, you're not doing surgery at 100+mph in a noisy, physical-threat-filled environment.

The simplest system that works is the best system.

Nor will the driver spend 100's of hours on track doing nothing but "practicing" his depth perception with the video monitor and various cars driving around behind him. Further, a surgeon is concentrating 100% on the monitor, while a race car driver should only be scanning the mirror/LCD for fractions of a second at a time.

Sure, if you can't make a rear view mirror work, a LCD is a good idea...sort of a "better than nothing" solution. But if the car has a perfectly good view out of the rear mirror, going to an LCD instead of a mirror for the hell of it is just not smart and over-complicates a simple solution.. Not to mention that a LCD on the dash would promote eyes down scanning rather than eyes up scanning of a rear view mirror.

It's being used on a few JGTC cars this year, pretty slick.

And I know of atleast one time that rule has been tested with a super tiny dental mirror and passed tech with it. A mirror is a mirror, they never specified the size.

A mirror is not always a mirror....

I remember one time at the Ruboffs, the X19 guys (yes, some masochists actually raced them) used the "Mirrors are free" rule in SS to create mirrors that repalced the targa roof. The scru crew was smart enough to see through that of course.

Like the development approach, but from my experience as others have stated depth perception can be an issue. Press the envelope but in the end for porsche production based race cars I think the mirrors are a great solution K.IS.S.

Remove the side mirrors and put a convex mirror inside the car near the side mirror location, basically the same function without the drag and cheap.

I can see the need if the rear vision is blocked. If you have a true blackout zone a cam/screen system might help, no depth or not, to let you know if there is a car in the blackout area. Yes/no at a glance.

I guess it comes down to will a mirror work better or not?
