Land Rover LR3. Amazing when you're not towing, can take 4,700lbs without breaking a sweat.

F-150 Crew Cab. You have the bed for all the nasty bits you do not want to smell on the way home.

With respect, Land Rovers/Range Rovers are among the least--if not THE least--reliable vehicles sold in the US, and get fuel economy only an Arab would dare mention.

We have a 2008 Mercedes ML320 CDI (Diesel) with the factory hitch that can tow 7,000 pounds and is a fine driver with or without the trailer. If I was doing all the towing and driving the tow vehicle as my DD I might have gone with the F250 (allows for an enclosed trailer as we continue down the slope!) and I hear the new one is really great. But I never tow- this is my wife's setup and she loves it and is very comfortable towing or not in it. She pulls a Trailex with 8 tires on board, a CaymanS, and fills the back of the ML with a tool chest, coolers and stuff. Still under 5,000 pounds.

If you go this way, buy it used (ideally CPO) and you'll save a lot.

That would be OK, IMO. Better would be like a 2007 or 2008 Tahoe, again IMO.

I towed with a Ford Expedition for several years before moving to an F-150 in '07. It towed my Trailex, with 993 or 964 Cup, tires, etc., and all my tools and "stuff" in the vehicle, fine for several years. I finally got tired of hauling some things inside of the vehicle that I wanted outside.

If you are not looking for a daily driver, go with a 3/4 ton diesel pick up.

This August I purchased a 2004 GMC HD 2500 crew cab 4wd diesel, with topper that one of my contractor clients had coming off lease. The client had lent it to me a couple of times in the last few years and I'd mentioned how great it was. The contractor was downsizing the company lleet, as the company is seriously downsizing.

Lease buyout was $11,500. Miles were 116K, barely broken in for a diesel. Maintained by Mike Courtney of Courtney Truck service, a PCA club racer and friend of mine. Other than having to buy new tires, which I knew going in, the vehicle has been great since the purchase in early August. In fact, on Christmas eve when the "storm of the Century" was predicted for Minnesota and we wanted to drive to the family lake cabin with the grown kids, dog, etc. for Christmas (225 miles straight north of Minneapolis) I went with the GMC. Did great and got 19 MPG running about half the time in 4wd.

I've towed with a fair number of vehicles in the last 20 years (our Volvo 745 wagon was never the same after the one towing experience) and the one conclusion that I've come to is that most people try to get by with too small of a vehicle and always pay for that with reduced mileage, stress and strain on the driver, lack of safety, etc.

Plus, this truck is known at our office as "a man's truck, for doing manly things with other men in a masculine way"

don't screw around with the little SUV's or foreign vehicles. Buy Detroit. There are a ton of good, reasonable used trucks out there to chose from.
