What a brutal impact that must have been. In the video you can see Surtees has the throttle pegged when the time the car comes to rest with the tires spinning....horrible. RIP.

That's one thing that scares me about any upright, open cockpit without a windscreen (SRF, Factory Five, etc.). You're really "out there" when facing debris from the front or the side. I guess it's all a question of probabilities. And it's all safe compared to motorcycle racers.

It's just another case of pros and cons of different types of race cars. I'd much rather have a purpose built car around me than a modified street car for most impacts.

No surtees was hit by an errant tire , senna died after crashing and having the suspension pushrod go thru his helmet ....

"The Steering column on the car was in 2 straight sections fitted in a bowl and cup (like an elbow or knee) with 2 locking clips. The clips were left loose and as Senna hit a bump just before the corner the rod came apart. He lost his steering and could not avoid the wall. On impact the loose rod travelled at velocity straight through his helmet and out the other side...he would have known nothing."

I met John Surtees at a motorcycle show cira 1980...............very plesant man who won both F1 and motorcycle GP championships; tragic happenings indeed.
