What a freak accident with the tire hitting him. A million to one shot.

But he got out and jogged away? Was it like a Natasha Richardson thing?

I believe that was the other driver.

Yeah, the video is a little hard to follow, especially in German...it was the other driver walking away.

What a brutal impact that must have been. In the video you can see Surtees has the throttle pegged when the time the car comes to rest with the tires spinning....horrible. RIP.

Very very upsetting to me.
I recall seeing Surtees Sr. at work in the Kendall Garage at the Glen many years ago, like a legend.

I still feel sick about that. And glad I never raced banana cars.

That's one thing that scares me about any upright, open cockpit without a windscreen (SRF, Factory Five, etc.). You're really "out there" when facing debris from the front or the side. I guess it's all a question of probabilities. And it's all safe compared to motorcycle racers.

But with the purpose built racecars you aren't having to deal with compromises in seat belt moutning, lateral and rearward driver support, extra mass of the car, egress issues, etc.

It's just another case of pros and cons of different types of race cars. I'd much rather have a purpose built car around me than a modified street car for most impacts.

This whole thing gave me chills, then I read this after seeing the tire hit in the video, so horrible RIP

"The Steering column on the car was in 2 straight sections fitted in a bowl and cup (like an elbow or knee) with 2 locking clips. The clips were left loose and as Senna hit a bump just before the corner the rod came apart. He lost his steering and could not avoid the wall. On impact the loose rod travelled at velocity straight through his helmet and out the other side...he would have known nothing."
