Default Speed TV commentary at its finest

Steve Matchett:

"Hamilton lost that maiden chance in his opening year to become the first driver, or i should say really the second driver to win the championship in his first year, because the driver that won it in the first year was always going to be the first driver to win it....if you see what i mean"

que?

Roundabout way of saying it ... the first season of F1 ... everyone was a rookie ... so whoever won the championship, won it in their rookie year. So if Hamilton won the championship last year, he would have been the second person to win the championship in their rookie year.

Yep I know but commentary like that just loses the big picture. Come on if LH had won last year he would have been the first. Matchett probably didn't celebrate the new millennium on 1/1/2000 either because there was no year 0!
