18' open trailer needs tire rack help
Looking for ideas. Been putting this off because my Bri-Mar 18' open steel trailer has been great so far. I have been putting my wet tires in the back of a Tundra pickup, gear inside the club cab.
We are now trying to do events more together as a family and own a E-250 conversion van now too. Only did one event together using the van so far, it was months ago and I had kinda forgotten I had to find room inside it for tires, gear and ramps. An event is four weeks away and my parents are going as well. My son says "Dad, where are you planning on putting the tires now". Ooops. So, now I'm in a hurry to find a welder and give him ideas.
Can you guys post pic's of what you have or have seen for a tire rack on the forward portion of your open trailers. I need mine to store just a set of wet track tires and my trailer spare tire.
I can probably put the rest of my gear inside the van. I have 8' or so 2x10's that I use to help the car clear the angle onto the trailer. I need to secure those to the trailer now too.All that and a place for some fuel jugs and I'm good to go.
Thanks for any ideas and especially pic's.

this 20' trailer which i just sold had the tire rack mounted just ahead of the flatbed. Worked out great although i never had enough extra wheels to go all the way across the whole thing. My new trailer is similar but lighter w/ an open center and better ramp placement in the rear. Im thinking of getting another tire rack or making one to put on this new one. - this pic i have the tires in the truck because the bar that held the tires i forgot to pick up at the storage place....duh.

I no longer have this trailer, but here's what I did for my open steel trailer. If I did it again, I would put the tires in the front and the storage boxes in the back, making it easier to load/unload tires with the car on the trailer. I had it made at a race shop - it's roll-cage tubiing put to a different use...

I would consider using all the space over your hood for storage and tires. This will accomplish two things for you: more storage and weight distribution. I made the mistake of building my rack at the front of the trailer which added a huge amount of t-weight. On the side of the upright structure you could have a couple studes welded to the framework to serve as anchorage for your planks.

If you're only intending to carry 1 set of wheels, I'd suggest looking for on-the-side attachments or simply stacking 2x2 at the front of the trailer. Adding a rack is a lot of work and cost for only 1 set of tires.
Assuming you can get 2 tires in your car (put each in a large plastic bag), lay the other 2 down in front of your car and strap them between your D rings or stack them on the tongue and strap them down.
I made a rack on the front of my Bri-Mar a few year ago. Steel alone was >$200 even for this simple design. Here's a pic of mine but it's not a closeup.

thanks again to those of you who took the time to respond. I had some pics from before too so with all this I am going to load the car and head off to a welder I have already kicked some ideas around with this morning. Thanks.
Anyone else with more pics please post too. Lots of good ideas here.

I am also interested in adding a tire rack and tool box to my open steel trailer but don't know if it makes more sense to sell it and just buy a used one with a complete setup. CT03911, please post pics of your final design and let us know how much it cost in material and labour.

I just bought a Featherlite 3110 this weekend like the one pictured above. I'll probably fab up an aluminum rack for it like the one above....
