Default Any Comments on the Starlane Athon, GPS Lap Timer...

I'm looking to get an inexpensive GPS based lap timer for the car. Not looking for a thousand dollar unit with extras I won't use, or a cheap beacon style unit.

There is a Starlane Athon GPS model for just over $500 that seems to fit the bill.

Does anyone know of this unit and can offer comments?

George, Everything else you have bought for the track is so nice!!!!!!!! Get a more effective setup that provides track and instrument data. It will help alot more than knowing how fast you go around the track at a DE (traffic will affect your times a bit waiting for points). You need to look at throttle, braking, corner entry.......... Since I know you to be committed to learning, you will get alot out of reviewing your progress.

My vote is:

1. Aim Pista MXL or Pro w/GPS (RPM, steering, brake, throttle integrated or sensors). SHift lights, predictive lap times, engine monitors, etc...
2. Racepack IQ3 (as long as it integrates with your car via bus or sensors)

But then you knew that..

George, with the GT3, do you actually NEED a digital dash or simply a good GPS? Besides, a gps unit like a traqmate or G2XPro would allow you to easily move the unit between the GT3 and the EVO.

just my $.02

A G2X [or an IQ3 if you want the dash] will give you shift lights, predictive lap timing, and far more capabiliy to grow. More importantly. these will give you a really powerful analytics package to review your run data in detail, and compare with others. In fact, you can compare with other using AiM etc al well. The numbers are the same, and you are really interested in corner entry speeds, braking points, shift points etc, and all the decent logger show that data.

I've been borrowing a traqmate. I don't know if you can easily determine the theoretical best lap, but the other data is pretty good.

it's not the easiest system to combine with data, though.
