Default Question about NASCAR and the heat in the car....

Ok, so as a closet NASCAR junkie (I actually just love all forms of motorsports) I am baffled why the NASCAR drivers don't run with Cool Shirts. Anybody know the reason why? I have yet to see it even addressed or highlighted during any of the tech talk sessions during a race.

I mean seriously, most of their races are what would be considered an enduro type race and they are CONSTANTLY complaining about the heat in the cockpit yet I haven't seen a single driver running with a cool suit. Sure, they have a blower on their helmet but that doesn't come close to the cooling properties of cold water in lowering the body's core temp.

I am sure there will be the typical NASCAR bashers here that will just have to take their cuts at an attempt to be humorous....but understand this is an attempt to get an honest answer from somebody that actually understand why there is no Cool Shirt used in NASCAR. This seems to be quite an obvious safety issue that NASCAR should address, no?

I think the helmet cooling can be pretty effective. You breath cool air in which cooles you inside out, not outside in.

Besides, cool suits are for pussies anyway. Just ask ask Ickx, Bell & others...

Sure, the air "helps" but is NOT the most effective. The most effective way to cool the body is to LOWER the core temp which is most efficiently done via a product like the Cool Shirt (especially with the hood attachment). Water does a better job than air. Hence, the reason I asked why NASCAR doesn't use a product like this.

Dell-

In my limited experience with Cool Shirts (I'm still trying to work the bugs out of mine) they probably won't last nearly long enough to go the distance then you have hot water circulating and that would be worse.

But given the minimum weights those bricks have to be I would think they could put a mini refridgeration system in there, seriously...

Dude: That air conditioning system is like $10K. 10 times better than a cool suit.
I had a chance to check one out at the PRI show 2 years ago. Pretty incredible.

They are pretty serious about winning. One more thing that could fail, with very expensive results if the driver overheats due to a broken cool suit...

Then they should use the refrigeration system, no?

So cooling the head and lungs is better than cooling the core?

Mike, that I couldn't answer. I would assume that COLD air is better than forced (from a blower or just outside air circulation). Between COLD air and a Cool Shirt system then I assume the air would be preferable to prevent to failure of the cool suit?

I don't know honestly. Right now I am just thinking out loud

They did a show on nascar TV (aka Speed) where the described in depth the electric AC system. Basically all the drivers use it, and when they break, the driver typically fall back as they overheat.

Looks to me like they need to not worry about A/C and concentrate more on teaching the guys how to drive! Anyone watch that Sears Point race? OMG, those guys drive like sh*t! There's less running into one another at a demolition derby! That ending was sooooo painful to watch. Don't believe we'll be seeing ANY of them in PCA racing any time soon.
