Boston to Mosport – recommended route
Any suggestions on the best way to get from Boston to Mosport? It’s either up through Vermont or New York. Hoping to get ideas from those that have taken the trip.
Thanks in advance

- the really important stuff is not the route, but at what time you are crossing the border and what time are you passing through toronto (if you choose to go this way)
- from the border to toronto is basically 1.5 hours
- as you do not have a canadian license plate, if you are passing through toronto at anytime near rush hour, take the toll road 407 (it will be free for you as they can't bill your out of state plate - they couldn't bill my NJ plate before i moved back to toronto but commuted back and forth for a while)
- if you avoid rush hour, your trip will be up to 2hours faster (including the border time) so this is the key
- to be safe, it is probably a much easier drive to cross near kingston and avoid toronto all together

Agreed with both of the above (90 then 81); you won't be anywhere near Toronto.
Watch the weather east of the lake; I ran into snow late 1 September (although I have grown up with snow, it took me by surprise - 'what is this white stuff?' I said as I was hauling along with the trailer. 'Whoa, time to slow gently').
Its a long but not difficult trip unless you run into border crossing delays.

I have found over the last couple of years of repeated crossings at I81 into the US and back home, that weekday travel during the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. generally see the shortest lines on both sides of the border at the 1,000 Islands. Friday later afternoons/evenings, and Sunday afternoon/evenings tend to be the worst. Now that our dollars are at par, there are more Canadians cross border shopping again. I know of groups of women who book a hotel room for the weekend so they can bring back more goodies. (I am not one of them.)

I use the 407 with NY plates and the bill always seems to find my house about 5 weeks after the trip.

On a slight hijack, do you guys "register" your stuff at us customs before exiting the country? We always get them to stamp our manifest form before leaving and the us customs inspectors seem very impressed on our return--well, atleast they've never asked us to "drive over there and stand away from the truck".
BTW, avoid the northway crossing at all costs in the summer. The lines can be oppressive.

I suspect it is a very good idea for those with enclosed trailers, Totorhomes, etc. With my open Trailex and easy to see into tow vehicle, it doesn't seem to be necessary.
