I just tallied it. 200.00 to 225.00 covers a 3day weekend excluding food. That's cheaper than golf and I told my wife this why I gave up golf. Much cheaper and safer than pushing a ball down a grass field. Next question........................

As has been stated many times above: the cost of racing just depends on how fast you want to go....AND what track/venue you want to run in.

If you can do all the work yourself, that saves money. If you can share a room, that saves money. If you don't mind running middle of the pack and use tires more than one weekend, that saves money, etc. etc. etc...

Then...one day...you do something and spend a LITTLE bit of extra. Maybe it's you use race fuel for the first time, maybe you got a new set of sticker tires, whatever....and...you win! Or, at least, your lap times get much better...... Uh oh... There goes your race weekend budget right out the window!!

Then....you need to add something to the car - new suspension, new brakes, new whatever...engine reguild? Sure, if it makes you go faster. It goes down hill VERY fast from there. At least with DE's, you can say "well, I'm not racing, I'm just out having fun". Not with racing. Nope. Suddenly, $8 a gallon race fuel looks like a good investment. $1200 set of tires each weekend sounds cheap.

Luckily...my wife drives too (and does Timing for PCA races) so 1) she knows every dollar we spend, and 2) only wants to know: "Will it make us go faster?" Case in point: we just put 935 suspension, Fox shocks with coil overs all around, and a whole bunch of new other parts. She never asked how much, until she drove it on the track. After the weekend, she said "ok, so now that I really like the new suspension, how many weeks to I have to work to pay for it?"

I raced a standard Formula Mazda 10 weekends a year with a few test days for about $20K a year with one set of stickers per weekend and arrive and drive service. I did this for three years. The last year I ran the car cost $32k due to a fatigue failure of a front A-arm resulting in 3 corners and a side pod turning into a neo-tubalist sculpture. The bills for the new pro formula mazda just keep on coming. I'm going to be afraid to add them up at the end of the year.

In case you stumble on to this thread...I spend about $37 per day on fuel...tires are $148 for the weekend and hotels usually cost about $41 per night. I really don't know what these guys are talking about...I'd never spend that much on racing.

BTW...my golf club membership had initiation fees of $114 and the monthly dues are also $114.

I added up the costs a while ago, and converted to euros since we are driving German cars. It's now surprisingly cheap!

Yeah, $864/day sounds pretty cheap. I used to spend 2k on tires, $750 track support, $4-500 on food and lodging, probably $600 on rountine consumables like oil, pads, rotors, fuel ect. $2-300 on truck fuel for a long trip. All in all I'd say at least 4-5k per race depending on 2-3 day event, or if you did a test day. Shoot the test day at Sebring was around $500 entry fee as I remember. Any damage and you can wipe out a years budget in an instant. New engine, tranny, LSD, clutch, wheel sets, suspension upgrades ect, they can cost. Better to buy a good car ready to go from day 1, but they will always need something....count on it !! BTW, I think that spec boxster class sounds like a great way to race cheap. Pump gas, tires that last 2 weekends, and loads of relatively cheap available parts. Sounds good to me. I definetely see that type of racing gaining popularity as everything gets more and more expensive. Anyone know what type of times they will run at the east coast tracks ?

I do Open Road Racing, a form of high speed rally on public highways in the mountains of Nevada,
sanctioned by NDOT. I run Supersport division, 160 mph avg (200+ mph tech) over 100-130 miles
the last 3 years, 170 mph avg this year. It costs over $2700 per event (about $500-800 less for
the lower speed classes). This includes event fees ($850), consumables ($1190), plus gas and lodging
($700). But, this excludes the cost of the car and upgrade...

I get a headache everytime I add up all the costs for about 10-12 DE's and 2 Club Races for a season. I just tell my wife it's not to expensive, every invoice is divided by 10. Plus, how can can you put a price on happiness?

he 1K per day is not far off and I run a 968, can't imagine what running a newer Cup car costs.

In the end there is nothing more exciting or rewarding than spending the day at the track.
