Default Word of caution SPEEDGALLERY in California

Quick story for those who care to listen,

Speedgallery has an ad for a 2004 Porsche cup engine here on Rennlist and it's also listed on ebay item # 260172310913.

The auction ended today with me as high bidder after 5 days at auction, no reserve. Had a few conversations with them about the details of the engine and all was looking good.

After the auction ended I called to make payment and shipping arrangements. I was told that there was a problem. And I will quote "The guy I asked to shill bid up the auction price failed to do his job and there is no way that I can have the engine for the that price".....no if ands or buts about it...

End of story...

Be careful if you ever do business with these guys...might try to pull a fast one on you..!!

Ebay customer service is run by Stalin's X people , nothing will come of it.
what these guys usually do if the bid amt is below what they expected , is give a sob story , say, something like the engine fell off the lift and was partially damaged, etc..... It's all part of the experience with evil Bay .....

The same motor is listed in the Rennlist classifieds for $19,900

Edit: It was on there with a Speed Gallery logo on the picture but someone must have pulled the ad.

Rick I think you were lucky.... I think know all about this motor and it's history but I'm still not sure. See there were 2 different motors and 2 Motorsports receipts with different serial numbers. Allegedly the first receipt was for new cases as they crashed and cracked them. The second receipt several months later was for a refresh. Unfortunately the case numbers don't match. From there it gets even more interesting.....

See the original owner of the Cup had 2 of them (identical) and campaigned them for 2 years in Rolex. Some guy bought the first one and crashed it bad this year and so he bought the second car since there are no tubs available. His engine was OK, so he boought the car sans motor. That's the motor you bid on. Stiill with me? So Motorsports had this second car 2 months ago for a PPI and I called Eric who said the motor wasn't theirs regardless of the receipts. So it's not clear which motor is which, or whether the receipts were for which motor. I finally just called it the mystery motor and gave up. I wanted to believe it was as advertised, but there were just too may discrepancies....

I can't pull up the auction, what did you get it for?....

He got a little run-around and a whole lot nothing.

I'm sure it goes without saying but make sure you provide a scathing (but truthful) review/warning to his e-bay feedback.

Hey JR,

That sounds about right.......

The auction still exists on e-bay, so I don't know why you can't see it. Anyone else?

The auction had a 20K buy it now and a 15K starting bid. I was the only bidder and it ended at 15K. Seemed worth it to me.

Hope you get it worked out.

Rick,

Am I going senile - or - on the auction picture, it looks like it was changed? I could have sworn last night, it was the same picture that was on the Rennlist ad, but with a speed gallery logo on the e-bay auction pic..???

Don't ask why I ask..

Sounds like you need to be speaking with the California Attorney General's office. Many states have specific criminal statutes regarding "auction fraud"...not sure how it applies to eBay....but it never hurts to ask.

I'd check in with the LA County District Atty's office. They have some sort of consumer protection unit that is pretty responsive. I don't have the exact name of teh unit handy, but it should be easily found from their website. Shill bidding is a crime. But given what John said, maybe it's better that you didn't get to close the transaction/

MMMM.... not sure why you would spend good money to go after a goof ball like that. Sure what he did was bogus. Your not really out of any money except for a few phone calls. The best thing you can do is what you already did which is let everybody know. What good is going through a big legal hassle (which will only turn into a pi$$ing contest) when you could spend the time to find another unit?

Dan.
