I haven't scared anyone yet (that I know of) perhaps it's because I'm not as fast as the rest of you!!
HWFM application in hand...

But, I have tried to show them that HP does not = fast laps...

I had a student who's first words out of his mouth were that the previous instructors all thought that he should solo. Come to find out it was only his second time at VIR and he was driving like we were in a ping pong game; cone to cone.

I wouldn't call him a PD but...

Anytime a student asks to be promoted or soloed the warning flags pop up.
Worrying that one's "talents" will not get noticed without mentioning them is the slowest way to progress in this hobby. Unassuming humility gets people promoted much faster.

i had one 0.0 student that knew how to drive as he had been driving for many years on the street and at least 6 months in his Porsh. Yep, his 25 years of street driving had him all set up. As he was 0.0 to track driving as well as 0.0 to the track at hand I, as I do with all students at his learning point, asked him if he wanted me to drive 2 laps to show him the flag stations and corners. "Nope I looked at the track map and have it down." Well after a couple of runs poking his hand out the window for much lesser cars he asked me to take a lap or two. We went out in Blue in my crappy old 912 and I drove at Blue speeds with no fear induction. Changed person. He went on to be a cool person and good driver. that is the only hard start I have had with a student in car. I would say that there are about the same # of asshats in DE as in the general population.

guys that theink they have early on natural talent are the ones that worry me. They exist but not in the numbers that exist if you asked each drover.

It's not necessarily that humility helps get you promoted, but most good drovers that I've come across are humble because they know how much they still don't know.

+1. Speaking as a relatively new DE'er with only 14 track days under my belt, each successive event reinforces this fact even more. Its like any sport... There are always people better than you that you can learn from. I don't doubt that will still be the case for me years from now on the track.

And I still feel that way about my own driving.

Time for another graph. I know you guys miss them so much. This chart shows what I believe the experience is of many conscientious drivers . . .

Good graph there TD. Funny and true. The trouble lies where the lines cross

The more I know the more I know I don't know, ya know?

Yeah, that's where I was going with the "think I am fast" line.

At this point, I know that I am a "good" driver (meaning that I am safe and safe to be around). But I do not think that I am a "fast" driver.

Being a "good" driver and being a truly "fast" driver are two entirely different things.

Most of the guys I consider to be "fast" know that they still have tons to learn . . .

Most of the guys who consider themselves to be fast are the ones I personally find to be slow. There are exceptions <cough>Larry<cough>, but those are few and far between.

+1

The more I improve the more aware I've become of how much I am leaving on the table. I group them in 2 categories a)Things I try but execute inconsistently, and b)Things I know would make me faster but have not worked up the confidence to try
