Default Garage spaces and DE

What would you consider the most fair and equitable means of assigning garage spaces at a DE? Assume 50 spaces at WGI.

First come/first served (free-for-all the first morning of the DE)?

First 50 people to register for the event automatically get a space?

Charge a fee, first 50 people to send payment get a space?

For clubs that charge a fee, do you keep that $ or give it to a charity?

Any other suggestions?

Simple. Charge a fee and award based on the first 50 payments made. Have the garage payments sent separately. The free-for-all doesn't work. Somebody will always bitch and complain and you'll ask for disorderly, inconsiderate behavior from folks that normally wouldn't act that way.

Garage spaces are nice perks for instructors.

Ah, sounds like you've been to our DE?!

Our region (Niagara) has always been hands-off, and let people handle it themselves. But since, like you say, disorder and bitching seem to occur we are considering other options.

Lonestar region in Texas has a pretty good system at Texas World Speedway. There are limited garage spaces and demand far exceeds the supply. They allocate garages to instructors first as a perk for volunteering and then the remaining garages are sold to students on a first come first served basis as they register. When the student registers, if they want to opt for the additional $50 for a garage, they can and once they are full, you go on a waiting list.

First 50 paying customers who pony up a garage fee. Let people know their garage number prior to arriving.

Assuming a fee, what is a reasonable amount? I see clubs charge anywhere from $20 to $50.

Phoenix international has covered spaces called a "garage". Don't confuse these with proper walled and enclosed spaces.

Various orgs have made these extra pay and free for all. Some have a few "reserved" for club officials and others are free for all.

Couple points

1) Pay for space means you need someone to organize that and make sure those that should be there are there. More money, but also more effort

2) Free for all means little effort to control, but some folks may whine if they don't get one.

Here is an example of the PIR "Garages"

Life in the garage.

Our region charges a fee, usually $35 for Watkins Glen Garages, and the first xx applicants to send it in after a set date get them (two cars to each garage door). The money goes to the International Motor Racing Research Council in Watkins Glen as a charitable contribution (checks are made out to the IMRRC, and returned to sender if no garage available).

When my region goes to the Glen, they carge a fee to the first 50 people who ask for a garage. The $$$$ is then donated to a charity. The garages always sell out.

You know, as much as I would be against something like that in general, I find this a really good idea. It will encourage instructors to sign up which means fewer wait-listed students. I am so tired of being wait-listed for weekend events at the major tracks by me, that I'm pretty much open to anything that would ensure instructors to sign up EARLY and in droves

I didn't even think about that Larry. I LOVE THE IDEA!!!!!!! Except at VIR, it is the track that charges for garages not the club. I guess the club could rent them all and then pass them out to instructors. One more problem though, there are NO ENOUGH at VIR to satisfy all the instructors. So maybe offer them to instructors that take 2 students.

If it takes 2 students to get a garage at VIR you can have it. I've got shade. A/C and something cold to drink. I don't need no stinking garage! The best part of the weekend is BS'n with your buds and you can't do that if you're constantly jumping from one car to the next. I did that once and will refuse to do it again...
