Default For the winch lovers

Ok so the whole insurance dance is done and my new trailer to be delivered. My question relates to the placement of the wich relative to the centerline of the trailer. I have not used a winch before (try to resist the obvious ) and I am not sure if putting the line on center will "drag" the car accross the trailer since the loop on the car (Boxster-s & 997 GT3) is off-center. The acutal winch attachment will be very stout with mounting and backing plates, etc.

Any feedback would be appreciated (30' enclosed Pace Daytona)

Christian,

I have a winch that is centered in the trailer and my connection point on the car is offset ... No issues in my case winching the car in strait. Btw, sorry about the stolen trailer, I saw it at Sebring last year and was very impressed with the setup.

Regards, Dave

I have mine offset in my V-nose Pace and it works perfectly. I have sealed windows making it more difficult to adjust mid-stream, so I chose to go offset. I know friends who placed it dead center have no difficulties....

Not to hijack your thread, anyone raise their winch via some type of blocking to clear the ramp? Any issues?

Many thanks to all. JR I plan using stainless steel bushings to raise the unit.

Regardless, I'd get the Superwinch 4000 if I were you. You don't want to be running on the edge of capacity, and you may find a time when the car is immobile and you need to drag it on the trailer (hopefully not). If you get the Superwinch brand, you may look into the wireless option. On my Featherlight, I installed the winch in the 'V' behind the cabinets and ran it out through the center spacer panel. The wireless remote makes it easy to run the winch.

Probably not news but winches have multiple ratings for applications. Most winches have selection guides for hoisting (dead-lift) and dragging (what I do with car). A selection chart will reveal that a winch can drag X on and incline of Y-degrees which is freaquently greater than the hoisting limit of the same winch.

Dang, I read the title of this thread too quickly. Thought it said "wench" at first.

Imagine my disappointment.

I did the Superwinch 3000 for a 2550 lb. car. I also bought their pulley block which allegedly doubles the pulling capacity. In retrospect I probably should have gone with the 4000 in case I need to put another car in there....

Christian can you offer me anymore specifics on the SS bushings? Height, diameter, etc...

I have a 4000 dead center on my trailer hidden in a floor compartment. ATC built an extension with a pulley you use to route the cable up from the underfloor compartment.

Pretty neat. Works like a charm (when the battery allows...).

Any details on your trailer lighting scheme and also, what are you doing re-security Lojack or Millenium or ?

JR: I am just taking round stock and having it machined to the thickness I want (3") then placing thru bolts creating a sandwich/laminate between the winch mounting plate, floor plate and backing plate under trailer.

Juan: So far boaring 2-lamp 4-foot F-tubes. However some of my mates are suggesting I mount a ceiling hung illuminating shaft that can be anhored on the foor creating a wonderful vertical support colum (S.P. spec) that has color changing lights, C4 guy knows what I am talking about Of course the oscilllating LEDs are for certain.

1 g is what you winch would pull if the car hung. So the calcualtion is like the mass of the car times the sin of the angle of the ramp or something like that but I think you should be at max mass of the car for a winch because sometimes you need to pull a dead car with smashed parts that don't roll up the ramp and you need some head room.
