Seeking Watkins Glen Lodging Recommendation
 

Going to Cups & Saucers in May and looking for a lodging recommendation. More specifically, interested in renting a condo for three of us that are going. Any suggestions? Are we better off just getting hotel rooms? Thanks.

Well, I don't think there's a condo anywhere near the place. The lodging near The Glen is "rustic" at best. I always to go to the Seneca Lodge and sign-up early to get one of the "motel rooms" (large with 2 double beds) instead of one of the "extremely rustic" cabins. The nice thing about Seneca is the bar - really is cool.

The Hilton in Horseheads, NY has nice rooms. Its a new property and about 15 minutes from the track.

I like the Longhouse Manor ( http://www.longhouselodge.com/manor.htm ) but doubt there is a 3 person room/condo.

You can rent houses and vacation properties at the Glen. I cant remember the link but do some google searching and check Skyler (sp?) County rentals or something similar.

A lot of negative stuff about the Seneca Lodge comes from those driving up from NJ and NYC area.

I ask you, if you drive through Perth Amboy/LIE or come into Penn Station/Grand Central every morning, how is it the Seneca Lodge takes such a beating?.............. Now, there's nasty stuff.

The Seneca Lodge is a sunday school picnic compared to that......

I have yet to go to a track where the near-track accomodations were five-star and my wife won't go to the track so I don't get any criticism there.

You're racing cars, for lord's sake, not going to a fashion show. You're gonna flop 10 min after dinner.

The Seneca Lodge is close to the track, has good food and has tons of history.

I second the Seneca Lodge suggestion. Close to the track, historic, wonderful bar, good steaks, friendly staff. The motel rooms are rustic (flourescent lights and indoor/outdoor carpet sticks in my mind) and the cabins (sometimes called "dog houses" because they allow pets?) are thought to be grim. I always stay at the Seneca Lodge, but would think twice about it were family to come.

I am pretty tolerant (and grew up near the track), but over the past several years, even the Motel rooms smell so bad that I don't stay there any longer. Try the Falls Motel, it has been recently renovated and is nice.

I stayed in one of the A-frame cabins once and won't do it again. It was tolerable but I stopped doing "tolerable" quite a while ago.... The bar on the other hand is a hoot and the food is fairly good for that area..

If it's good enough for me, then it is good enough for the family. :icon501:
I stay at Seneca Lodge because of the bar. Make sure you pack decongestant because you'll need it after spending the night in a room there.

I, and most of my track friends, don't do any of those things you ask about above, nor would I on any regular basis (you need to see what the area is really like). But we do know about clean, mold free rooms, and they are available closer to the track and at a lower cost.

The Seneca Bar is worth a stop.

Seneca was fine until the night I had to stay in one of the A-frames. I didn't mind cramped and run down, but going without sleep did it for me. 2 couples next door (being a relative term; they were about 6' away) didn't seem to think that their noisy party should end before 3 PM.
I did so love firing up the diesel the next morning; conveniently the tail pipe was pointed right at their windows.

BTW the Garden Inn is sold out. They are charging $200/night that weekend. Maybe that's due to the graduation conflict someone mentioned earlier. I'm going with the Seneca at $85/night.
