Did Anyone See the Last 30 Laps of the IRL...
race at California today? Holy crap, I don't care what kind of cars they use, that was some of the best racing you will ever see. 5-8 cars swapping positions 10 times a lap with a few cars dropping off as the laps wound down and the first and second place cars touching wheels at the checker flag. That has to be the closest racing at those speeds (220 mph) wheel to wheel there is.
Just amazing. The in car angles were spectacular.

Yes.
And I'm frustrated to say that I was
there yesterday for the GrandAm race
but had to return late last night.
Got to see the IRL qualifying, though.
First I've time I've seen Indy cars.
TV does no justice to the experience.
California Speedway is a great facility.
Don't pass up an opportunity to go there.
I understand that PCA-SD is having an
event there - I'll have to check it out.

EJ,
I didn't get to watch the race because I had some family stuff to do but I did see the highlights. I agree it was awesome wheel to wheel racing.
Hornish seems to be able to race so close to others and not take them or himself out. Others should follow his example. My hat is off to him and J. Lazier for an awesome race.

Yes . . . <img src="graemlins/jumper.gif" border="0" alt="[jumper]" /> . . . seated along the front straight just before start/finish, with a view of the whole track. What a race! Anyone who says running around an oval is boring didn't see this race! This picture was taken just before Cheever's engine failed, it's not that great but you can see how close they are.
They were that way for many, many laps, all the way around, including through the turns. At one point, there were 4 side by side down the front straight, and several times 3 side by side through turn 2. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get a picture of the finish. Also, as you can see, the crowd was on their feet by then, and stayed that way through the end of the race. Not a really big crowd, though.
Even with ear plugs, my ears were still ringing last night!

Pat,
I have been there also. What I found that helps is to wear the foam type ear plugs AND the ear muff (shooters ear protection). That is what I have done at Indy for the 500 and F1.

EJ, Fontana was, in my mind, the loudest shot across CART's bow to date. WOW, what a race! CART was really stupid to give up Fontana, Michigan, Milwaukee, and Nazareth.. IRL moved right in and I think we're going to be seeing some more excellent racing out of them.
And thank god for Sam Hornish to give Penski some comeuppance. That kid is an animal. It will be interesting to see if he can put it together at Indy this year.
