Need Advice on 944 Club Racer for PCA??
 

Hello Porsche Nuts!!!

I need some advice from the PCA club racers and 944 owners. I want to get into PCA CLub racing with a 944. I want to start out in the lowest class (stock) and keep my costs down. Which class allows the least amount of modifications and what are the modicifcations allowed other than saftey equipment?

I would like to purchase a 2.5 944 or a 944S (86-89) and would like to spend no more than $6000 on the car with $3000-$4000 for race prepping. I have racing experience in Formula Dodge (Skip Barber) and do a ton of track events every year. My main goal is to compete in a class where the emphasis is on driving skill not "who can spend the most to build the best car."

What class in PCA should I be looking at and is my budget for building a PCA CLub racer relistic. I know I can go much lower on the car price but I want something with less than 90,000 miles and I don't want to be faced with a engine rebuild.

Also for those of you that started out in stock class what did you think about the level of competition and how much was your racing budget for a season.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Those are lots of questions. I think you'll get some good answers by checking the PCA Club Racing rules at

Click on "2001 club racing rules" to get the document. It will tell you the minimum required safety equipment and modifications allowed for stock classes, and what classes the 944's you're interested in would run. In addition, while on the PCA club racing area, go to

to see what the competition is like in the various class you might be interested in. The results for 2000 and 1999 are also online. Since you indicate you have some track experience already, you may find a PCA club race that's taken place on one or more tracks you're familiar with. Again, looking at the best lap times will give you an idea of the competition.

The 83-85 will be the most inexpensive to build because of the front control arms. 86-89 will have better aerodynamics and better engine management 88-89 being the best.83-89 will be in the "I" (stock) class depending on the mods you choose to do. The 944 S2 Will be in the "F" class if stock. You can modify the suspension but not the engine and stay in the "stock" class I have built several 944 for PCA Club Racing and I race one myself. To do the basics it will cost at least $4000-$6000 not including the car. Less if you can work on it yourself. Hope this helps. Good Luck and hope I see you at the track (Peachstate reigon) #57
