Post towing with a Toyota Tundra

It is too late to back out but I pick up a 24' Featherlite enclosed trailer next week. The dealer says it weighs about 3,500#, my car is 2,800# so 6,500/6,600 with tires/tools and fuel. Anybody towing a similar rig with a Tundra X-cab, V8, 4X4 ?

You should be fine. Tundra w/v8 is rated for
over 7000 pounds.

Eugene.

IMHO... that sounds like a lot of trailer to be pulling behing a Tundra. Working in agriculture I have had plenty of opportunity to talk to people that pull some heavy loads. The folks I have spoken to all suggest that for a 24' enclosed trailer with car, tools, and spares that a 3/4 ton truck is much better. A heavier larger truck (even an F150/Expedition) is much more stable and will hold up to that kind of use much better than a light duty 1/2 ton truck.

If you have to tow with a Tundra you would certainly be well advised to upgrade with an aux. cooler for the tranny and oil.

Yes I think it will work fine, not ideal but leaving a little more stopping room...

Sam, CMP went like this. Good news was I qualified 2nd in C until they impounded a D 993 and moved him to C which placed me 3rd, 11th on the grid. Fabiani, Brown, Trombly, Fishman... none of the fast RS guys were there.

5 laps into the race I tried a inside pass that looked like it was pretty conservative. We met with a bang at the apex. All indicators led me to believe the car in front would give me racing room, "coexist". Nothing a left front fender, splitter, bumper cover and Fikse FM10 won't fix.

Ouch! Glad to hear it wasn't a frame bender!

Sounds like this paint swapping could help with the removal of the 47 gallon windshield washer unit in the front fender if you haven't already done the RS conversion!

Glad to hear you qualified 2nd. How did Joe Fab do? Also, what did you think of the track? Was your "mental racing" helpful at all?

I liked the track. It is not a technical track that takes tons of practice like Watkins Glen or VIR. Very simple, lots of slow turns and very little elevation change. The sand factor and killer curbing was new to me. The track tapes did help out a great deal. I watched last years race fifteen times or so.

I just blew up the 6.0L engine in my 2001 Yukon Denali. The 1/2 ton truck had 27K miles, most of which was towing my 22' Featherlite with 996 aboard. I think the total rig is about 6500#. I don't know at this point if it was just a bad part or if I expected too much out of the Yukon. It's rated at 8500# for towing but I don't know if they are designed to tow all the time.

I think I'll be looking for a 3/4 ton diesel when my warranty runs out.

Bill,

Have you sold your current trailer? If not, let me know.

Also, it was nice to see you there and hope you got the pics I sent you.

Jim, Yes I did get your e mail but I can't open a zip at home. I will get them up at the office. Thanks, great to meet you at CMP even though I was having a bad hair day

Yes the open trailer is spoken for. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
