Fire suppression
 

had a near miss last year in my 951 practicing for then Glen Club race. The #2 bearing let go and the connecting rod exited the oil pan. A good bit of oil hit the header and i got some good flames for a couple of seconds out the rear of the hood. What's a little more worriesome is that the hard plastic vapor return line was burned back to the rear axle....can't understand why its plastic.

In any event, this has gotten me to think about fire suppression and i was wondering if you guys had any recommendations for setup and suppliers.

Wanna be faster but safer as well.

There are many good fire systems available. Perhaps an archive check will disclose a local vendor. I am writing this to highlight a problem I have seen when cars have crashed at speed and the actuation cable was destroyed in the crash! There are good solenoid actuated systems that will allow parallel wires to be run thereby providing a redundant actuation mechanism. Two bottles mounted in different locations is not a bad idea either. Be safe and have fun!

Something that wasn't mentioned was your suggestions regarding redundancy...seems like an excellent idea.

Somnething I did along the lines of redundancy, was I put in a full haylon system covering the engine, driver area and fuel cell area. And I carry a 2.5lb bc with in my reach. I spend a lot of my time at tracks were the greatest fire risk is from sparks and setting the grass on fire. A onboard system will not do much good putting out a grass fire under your car.

I agree with Jim, I too carry a 2.5lb halon extinguisher within reach along with a 7LB Phoenix fire supression system wih nozzles in the cockpit and engine bay. As far as the fuel cell, I was told that if it goes up the fire system won't help much anyway, god forbid that ever happens.
OG Racing is the place for fire systems.

Maybe not, but if the fuel cell is bathed in halon, it would be harder to ignite since there would be no oxygen present.
