limited slip track benefits
I have a track dedicated 993. The motor is out for other work and the car does not have limited slip. This would be a good time to install it if the benefit exceeds the cost, $1,500. or so.
What is the popular opinion?

Bill,
You will love it. If the car is track dedicated as you mentioned, go with a LSD rather than a torque biasing type. I am running a GT and am very happy with it.

There is a very good article about LSDs and their benefits in the Feb 2001 issue of Velocity, available as pdf at www.porscheclub.com. The last paragraph deals with your question:
What does this all mean to you, the
owner/driver of a club car? Well, if you can
get one of these whammy zammy limited
slips into a gearbox that you own, you will be
totally amazed. Your lap times will improve
the very instant that you make the change.
Lap time improvements are not insignificant.
We have been able to find literally seconds
per lap with differential changes and so will
you. Although there aren’t many guarantees
in life, this is certainly one of them
If that doesn't have you rushing out to get an LSD, what would?

Bill,
After installing my GT LSD I lowered my lap time at The Streets Of Willow by 2 seconds....it's not difficult to install and I'm pretty sure it can done without dropping the gearbox. My trans was out at the time so I installed it myself. Best price I found was Zim's.
Kevin's right , you'll love it!

Bill,
Having driven with you I am sure you are in the bracket where you need a limited slip. The fact that you don't have one will begin to cause limitations for you. In general it will eliminate wheelspin in tight corners and contribute to better stability in very fast sweepers.

I never knew if I had LSD or not. Now that I found out I do not and the information here... I cannot go back to the track without it! Streets of Willow, isn't that a short track 1.5 miles or so? Wow if I shave 2 secoonds off of Summit Point takes me down to 1:24:2 (fastest lap) this will be the best mod we have made!
Hello John! See you at a track soon. Schattenbaum/Summit Point next Thursday & Friday.

Brother Bill:
You GOTTA do it! The benefits are no wheelspin in slow corners and greatly increased trailing-throttle stability under braking and corner entry. Your confidence level will go up and you will have an easier time controlling the car.
Its a biggie!
The ring gear backlash & pinion depth must be checked whenever these are installed, and this requires total disassembly of the gearbox. Use the GT (ZF-type) ones, NOT the OEM 993 Factory LSD.

I think that this is the bit that most people don't realize: you can enter corners at higher speed (trailing throttle), with more stability.

Bill,
Please don't do it! I need to make sure someone is behind me in the race at VIR.
Besides you need to put your money in the market so the rest of us can make some cash to go play.
Engine out? Oh no I know what that means.
BTW what kind of times do you turn at VIR?

Yeah, the SOW course is about 1.5 miles with 15-16 corners (full-course including new back section)! Mostly 2nd & 3rd gear turns and upon reviewing my videos, a full 16-seconds of my 1:38 lap is with the wheels spinning! I'm looking forward to seeing how my times improve with a LSD!

I attend about 12-14 DE track days per year, and this sounds like it could be a nice addition. There are more than enough corners where wheel spin is an issue.
However, I also use my car as a daily driver. Is there any downside to the limited slips metioned when driving around town?

Vinny,....there are no drawbacks here aside from the hit on the wallet,...
You might need to make a swaybar adjustment as the front end will push a little more in low speed corners with heavy throttle. You can easily compensate for this with the RS adjustable swaybars.
