Default Suspension Trick

Some were interested in some suspension tricks I am using this year.

Spring will rest on a torrington bearing. This should reduce side loads on the shock shaft and result in better control of damping. This is a pretty cheap solution.

Mark, you bought those too? They certainly make turning the adjusting collars much easier when loaded on the scales.

What cute little springs and shocks. I'll bet they cost every bit of what the manly springs and shocks cost on my car. I understand the purpose of the Torrington (or thrust) bearing to eliminate spring bind when turning, but how do they reduce side loading?

To cheap and easy to pass up.

When you compress a coil spring and the ends are constrained, the torque through the coils creates a bending force on the spring. I was told that up to 30% of the total damping has come from the friction at the shock seal when not controlled. Hyperco perches do the same at a much higher price.

The "cute little springs" are pretty cheap. The "cute little shocks" are not - they are right at $1,000 each and I don't even have the really trick parts in them.

Can you get just the bearings? If so where would one get them?

Of course, but it is only money.

Actually these are pretty cheap - I think around $10 each.

McMaster Carr sells them but did not have the right size for my shocks. You can search for torrington bearings to find other suppliers. Mine are a part for an automatic transmission.

The Hyper perches are trick, but like you said, expensive. Make sure you use the hardened races with those Torringtons. Also, make sure the spring gets seated each time the car get lowered onto the ground as the thin races tend to catch on 'things'..

Great mod!!

Thanks. Unfortunately, I had to remove the inner race to make it fit. I will just have to watch it carefully. At least I have easy access to more if needed. Good pointer about watching how it seats - thanks.

Are the rings upon the bearing a hardened item? If so where do you source that?

More than once, we would dump the airjacks and send the car only to have him return with strange feelings and low and behold, we would sometimes find one of these races jammed where it shouldnt be. This was since we never preloaded springs.

If you do preload your springs, no worries mate

I installed these on a car after taking Claude's class. No noticable difference.

Not saying it does not help, but I could not quantify it.
