Post Helmets relined

In looked at the PCA racing rules changes, I notice that under the discussion of Helmet Snell ratings it mentions helmets being "relined". Does anyone provide this service? Can you send a helmet to Bell or Simpson and get it re-lined and get a new Snell rating?

I sent my Simpson Snell 2000 M helmet back to Simpson and they relined it with Nomex and restamped it as a Snell 2000 SA.

It costs me $100.

As I recall, Bell will reline/refurbish the helmet as long as it's less than 5 years old. Don't know if they would also update the rating, but maybe like Simpson they do.

In my particular case, I had only owned the helmet for a few months and for my model, Nomex was the only thing that distinguished SA or M rating. The shell was the same.

The differences between the SA and M standards is that SA-rated helmets undergo a flammability test, have a narrower field of vision than M-rated helmets, and have a rollbar impact test.

I checked on Bell helmets - they'll redo the lining for up to 5 years from the production date stamped on the buckle, and a reline doesn't upgrade their helmet to SA00.

Roger,

I checked with Nortstar Motorsports in Barrington, Il (800) 356-2080, which is where I bought my helmet. They said they would send it to Bell, about $160.

Roger,

Follow-up. I sent an email to Bell Auto Helmets, asking about relining, and the note back said to call 800-237-2700
