I had a bolt-in cage that I pulled out and replaced with a custom made weld-in cage. The price is not that much more expensive once you consider the all-in cost and the quality is MUCH better. Besides the chasis being much stiffer, a custom cage allows for the bars to be much tighter to the car, i.e. your head is not dangerously close to making impact in an accident. The bolt-in cage was OK for lapping, but for racing I would I think you should really consider having a cage fabricated.
Todd Opperman of TOPP Racing did mine. He has a shop at MSR and does amazing work.

I sure wish the PCA guys would come out and race with NASA here in Rocky Mountain. NASARM was new last year so we are still growing. No contact or accidents last year. This year should be a blast we have 5 944-spec cars (Toyo $) and at least 1 Porsche in SU. GTS or PT or even TT.

You guys are starting to talk me into this. That Eagle's Canyon race might be fun. It looks like I'd be a GTS5. At least I ought to be more competitive there than PCA GT1!

Cages can be bolt in or custome weld in but read the rules for details.

I tested one of Todd's cages in 2002 at an SCCA race with the inside wall at Road Atlanta after coming under the bridge. I hit the wall hard. Car was totaled but I walked away (with hans). Cage was fine with no intrusion. I know of another racer with one of Todd's cages that got launched off another car in a NASA race at MSR rolled a couple of times and then spun like a top on it's roof. Same result, driver walked away, cage intack, and car totaled. Both of the incidents were in spec miatas.

This is also a Todd cage. He is absolutely the best I know. I would trust him with my life, in fact already have and do...
