My '2000 996 head gasket went and coolant destroyed my entire engine. (I then had a student in a 1999 996, new to the track, not pushing the engine, and his engine was destroyed, and he had to be towed out like I did). All of this within three weeks. How many others out there had this happen? I've been told that it is not that uncommon for the 996 engine, though I haven't been reading about it here. I'm not aware of anything I did that should have hurt my engine.
Anyway, since then I ordered a new engine, and a 997S 3.8L engine has arrived, and the sorting out has begun.
What differences do you know about that will be important?
So far: the fuel line is a single one instead of two, so the fuel pump is in the tank. The sport switch changes the throtle map and aparently is best disconected so that you have an even flow from zero to full throtle; instead of a quick throtle, then nothing after halfway. The PSM cuts in later for the 997. (Not sure how that will be addressed yet. I like the 997 aproach, but not sure if it will work with the 996 body). Your ideas on important differences? Thanks
Oh yes, (beware, advertisement coming: I have a Europipe year 2005 996 muffler which sounds great and the metal work is second to none. I plan on replacing it with a 997S Europipe system and hope to sell the 996 muffler, original cost $1,740 + $230 shipping, but first have to see if the 996 engine will sort out OK).

Did you get a new DME also? How much was the engine then? My 99 996 broke a wall and various rods about a month ago and I got a 2001 replacement factory engine for 14k. Apparently, 99s and 00s are just bad. The 01s are better.

It came with everything, though it all doesn't match up.(Yet!). (I'm not doing the work, so my knowledge is limited, but my curiosity isn't).

14k for a reman engine? you might have been taken because last i saw they were ~8500 (from the dealer) and used one's going for ~2500. ya no 2 year porsche warranty but helluva deal.

speedread: good thing you have a '00 with egas making the 997S conversion is possible. i can't do it to my '99 since it is cable throttle. while you are at it, you should get x51 . be sure to check if it has the motorsport oiling kit. it used to be part of the v1 & v2 x51 kits.

All I have to say is best of luck and let us know how it turns out.

I know the wiring harnesses are completely differnet as well as the number of wires and pinouts for the ECU. Keep in mind you car lacks wiring for the E-throttle, the variable fuel pump control and MOST bus to start with. I have seen some of the wiring schematics Ruf has put together and they swap drivetrains only between common generations because of the differences. This is the reason why they only do 3.4l (99' 996) swaps for early 986 Boxsters and only 3.6l (02-04' 996) swaps for late 986 Boxsters. They use only 997 engines for their 987 swaps. You are probably best off just adapting your existing wiring harness, throttle body and fuel rails to the new engine and then trying to work with a programmer like GIAC on customize a program in your stock ECU.

Mine was 13.5k. I had an extra 2.3k for a core because they wouldn't take the old one as a swap. I think thats the correct price. From everything I've heard, you don't want a 99 engine, you want an 01.

How much was the 3.8S engine then?

ya i am smoking crack. i think i've seen some engines go for 2500 on ebay. of course this the extreme rock bottom price. they go for 6~8K at dismantlers.

The price on rebuilt engines from Porsche is all over the place depending on the model year and options. The MSRP (as of today) for a regular MY99 is $7647.24 so you could probably still pick one up in the low $5k range but the same engine with option M339 (4-wheel drive) and the price is $12399.91. The MSRP for a MY02 M96.03 is $6733.00, MY03-04 $7568.60. Add at least $3k to the above for an X51 motor.
