Is the 911 competitive in SCCA ITS class?
I just started racing and have been renting a 1st gen RX7 for the IT7 class. I would love to race a 911, but am worried about staying competitive. Anyone have any insight for me?
Thanks,

Jason,
I'm not aware of anybody racing a 911 at this time. I've heard rumors, but haven't been able to confirm them.
If you are really interested in racing a 911 in IT, you may want to hold off just a bit. There is a grassroots effort to get a class created above ITS and later models of 911 are on it IIRC. The proposal goes to the IT Advisory Committee this weekend. We are discussing it on our conference call on Monday and will be passing it along to the Club Racing Board where we understand there will be a fairly warm reception. If the CRB likes the proposal, it will be moved to the Board of Directors in time for their August meeting. This meeting is critical as it will have to be agreed upon by the board then to be instituted for 2007. It's looking pretty good for this class to be created, but of course, until it actually gets the blessing, anything could happen.
For others interested in either racing a car that is not competitive in PCA for one reason or another or would like to race at a higher prep level w/o going too extreme, the proposal also includes:
944S2
968
986
The 928 may even have a shot. It's been debated, but the initial list of cars currently excludes V-8 cars. There is some momentum for them to be included though.
Other interesting cars include the 3rd gen RX-7 (NA) and BMW E30 M3.
I'll try to get the list up later.

Hmm, some of those cars aren't 5 years old, are they going to bend the 5 year IT rule?
What ever happened to the WCGT-> BP WCTC -> DP proposal?

The other proposal I've heard rumors of, but I'm not involved and actually don't have any solid knowledge of.

As for mods, the very very basics are:
Engine:
Balancing
Raising compression through shaving the head only.
Pulleys are free
Exhaust (including headers) is free
Modifications inside the otherwise stock ECU box is free
Suspension:
Same number and types of springs (t-bars for t-bars, coil springs for coil springs). Coilovers are allowed if the car had coil springs stock.
Bushings are essentially free
Two adjustments (e.g. bounce/rebound) allowed to dampers - no remote reservior
Swaybars are free
For more info check out the links. It would be very hard to recap all the rules here.

Ah, the old hidden link trick...
The basic SCCA GCR, which includes the rules for IT, can be found at www.scca.org. The IT prep rules are the same for all the IT classes excluding ITE - unless it were necessary to make any special allowances for ITR (a working name that has been used, by some, to refer to this faster-than-ITS class). So, I'm allowed (or not allowed) to do the same things to my ITB car as you would to an ITS or faster 911. Of course, George has run down the basic/big items above.
An important note here is a basic principle of the IT rules: IIDSYCYC. If It Doesn't Say You Can, You Can't. If what you want to do isn't explicitly spelled out in the rulebook as legal, it's not legal.
OK, I'm glad I went looking for the GCR on the webpage - not trivial to find. Here's the direct link to the 2006 GCR:
http://www.scca.org/_FileLibrary/File/GCR2006.pdf
I have seen a 911 run locally in ITS, and seemed halfway competitive, but you don't get all the way to the front unless you're seriously committed (at least, on a technical track like ours), and he seems to have moved on to GTS. I still wonder if a seriously-built and driven 911 could take on the big Bimmers...

I'm sorry. There was another thread going where I posted links and forgot to here.
Vaughn has posted the GCR. Here is the ITCS (category specs):

Three Wheelin'
I know one guy running a 911 in ITS, and he has for several years. It started as a 911T and I could keep up with him. Then he changed to a 911 E and I can't keep him in sight. His name is Jack Shultz, and he is from somewhere in Mo. He usually comes to Memphis and St Louis. He may be at Memphis next week. He can't keep up with the BMW's and fast Mazda's. He says a big problem is that SCCA won't let him run a duck tail and his car gets light in the rear on long straights like at St. Louis. I remember him at St Louis, and he would beat the BMW's in the infield and then get totally blown away on the banking. He's a pretty competent driver, and one of the nicest guys I know.

Thanks for the info. I have seen Jack in the results lists. Looks like he did well last year. If you can send me a way to get a hold of him offline that would be great!
I will be waiting until the winter to build or buy a car so hopefully the new class gets formed, although it looks a little fast for me,

The new class is going to have to go through the CRB and the BoD so no guarantees. However, the ITAC had our conference call last night. The proposal is going to the CRB today. We had 3 CRB members on the call with us and the interest is very high.
As for the 911 in ITS, I have good second hand information that a VERY prominent E36 ITS competitior is VERY serious about building a 911 for ITS. He thinks it has more potential than the Bimmers.
