Steering wheel quick release

another vote for tekniq. i've had it for 2 years now and no play. i agree w/ jack, skip the locking one. it's an unbelievable hassle w/ the key. only reason i got it was b/c someone on pelican once mentioned that the "race" model does not have a provision for the horn. well it does. other than the locking key feature, it's identical to the "street" version.

also, i used to have a spline type of release. the spline wasn't the fine tooth one but rather a large hex. (i think it was hex....) this was a daily driver/DE car and after lots of removals (used it as a theft deterrent) due to metal wear the freeplay increased. wasn't really that distracting when driving, but noticeable nontheless.

That Nissport bolt on quick release that doesn't require and adapter looks promising. I have a question about it though: is it keyed in anyway to ensure that you put the wheel on straight? Some QR hubs are drilled through to allow you to see the splined shaft, I always mark it so you can make sure the wheel is oriented correctly. Since the Nissport one isn't a "see-though" type how can you quickly check to see if the wheel is on straight? Putting the wheel on a spline tooth or two off can really screw up your run.

This splined QR from LTB is pretty cheap ($99) but requires you to buy a hub adapter as well.

Nope, it isn't keyed. But I haven't really found it to be a problem. My last step when getting out of the car is to straighten the steering wheel to center position. That way when I get back into the car I just pop the wheel back on and its good. Its been only once or twice when I didn't get it right. But since when I head to the grid I don't get out of the car again - due to the full containment seat, HANS, radio, etc - it's no big deal to notice it's one tooth off and correct it while waiting to go out.

I use the TechniQ on my 968 and love it. I tried others and they all had play. The TechniQ was the only one that was as tight as the stock set-up. I drove an entire season with it without any problems.

If you can afford to pay the $$$ for the GT3 mechanism - it is pure pornography - a jewel of engineering. However - it is somethink like $600 when all is said and done.

That being said, I have a crappy smart racing one that works just fine - though as noted it does have some play at rest.

FYIW- I've got the LTBMotorsports splined version on my 944 w/ a Momo wheel - no play at all, does move the wheel closer to you. LTB was great to deal with - I understand they are very supportive of Club Racing.

Our Atlantic chassis uses the SPA Technique QRE1 quick release. Its a high quality piece that is relatively affordable. Available in 5/8 and 1" spigots.
The E in the p/n indicates a 8 pin Lemo connector for any wiring required. Nice, reliable piece..

The LTB piece does bring the wheel closer with the Momo adapter -I'd guess by 3/4"-1", best as I can remember. I'd go out and measure, but the car's in storage, and it's 15 degress in Ohio!

Add an inch to those figures and you'd be accurate. The LTB unit and our universal are nearly identical.
