$150 - that's a good deal.... you have a point. Unlikely to damage anything else if the diff blows anyway.
I had a 4:11 that I sold (actually exchanged) to Nort a few yearsa ago. It makes a difference, especially on Roebling and the like. With the 225/45/15 tires on 15" wheels there is a lot of gear changing! On some tracks (i.e. road atlanta) I found my self having to shift in a fast turn from 4th to 5th, but it was never too hairy.

I am pretty sure that Nort installed that gear. When I raced on the same track with him at Rennsport II (You will notice I didn't say I raced against him, he was in another league.) he had a 411 gear in it, and 9x16 wheels in the rear with 245-45-16's. He had about the same final drive ratio that those of us with 225-45-15's and one heck of a lot wider tires. He blew all of the 944's away. Also that is his home track, and he's good there. I remember when he finished 6th in an ITS race there (With 15inch wheels to meet ITS rules) with 50 some cars in the class. The other 944's including a 944S were way behind.

Actually, we exchanged gear boxes. it also has the late 5th gear, so in 5th the gearing is great. He ran it for a year, then rebuilt it. I don;t know that he uses it at Daytona, he intended to use it for short tracks. But I know he likes it!
We went to the Daytona SCCA race last month. According to my speedo, 145mph on 225/50/15 Kuhmos (1 year old), and 138mph on 225/50/15 Hoosiers (brand new). Makes you think - how much rolling resistance is in the Hoosier. That said, lap times were lower in the hoosiers.
How'd you like Rennsport - I had a blast, although the schedule sucked for us little cars...
