Since this thread got revived -- and since I had to put the rack on today anyway -- I took some more pictures to show some detail without the wheels on it. I store the rack outside, so the steel spine piece now has a light coat of rust (maybe I'll POR-15 it).

There is padding wherever the tires come in contact with the rack:

There's also padding where the rack mounts meet the roof and drip rail.

I got rid of the Thule ***** and replaced them with normal nuts and a lock washer. I use a specific torque setting on a wireless drill to make sure I've got uniform tension all the way around:

The uprights that go through the wheel centers are PVC pipe, which is softer than the Fuchs alloy. To make sure I'm not wearing away at the alloy, I have two layers of PVC, with a layer of padding inside of that, so that the uprights have a lot of give:

One bolt threads to the center -- which is an L-shaped angle iron -- but the whole piece is loose on that center. The hole at the top is where I thread a length of aircraft cable. Only having to thread one cable (which has a lock, to deter thieves) is a lot better than when I ran the wheels upright and had to secure them with several different straps and bungie cords. I can get the wheels on the rack and mounted in about two minutes.

I think someone should post this daily until colorchange comes back. It must be inticing being his thread.

I bought ColorChange's rack and modified it slightly to make it easier
to detach and remount quickly.

Hi. I bet he has enough interests and abilities to keep busy for the
next 10 decades. I just know him from his posts to various Porsche
sites, and I have seen none such for several months...
The rack is very useful for my 996tt, carrying my 18x12 and 18x9
wheels 90 miles each way to my farthest autocrosses. The telequipment
rack has key access to the four allen-head bolts. Remove them and
the rack is an easy lift-off. I usually leave the four aluminum 'nubs'
attached to the roof. These mate to the rack base, and weigh next
to nothing, but they come off with another four allen heads, using the
same fancy-handled allen wrench that comes with the rack.

Great racks, guys. (Never thought I'd say that before--usually it's "Look at that rack, guys!")

Tim (ColorChange) says:

"Tell them I'm still around, and plan to do the PCA event at Gingerman".

I made a rack for my '87 911 and used it for years. I would recommend that you consider heavy duty plastic bags for the tires. Otherwise, if you get hit by rain on the ride home, your car will be covered with brake dust, which is pretty abrasive, and difficult to get off if it goes on wet, and dries. I used a basket type carrier, and the bags helped me cram them in (I made it very tight, and used diagonal straps for security) The car was very stable at speed, but a bit noisy from wind.

Cool Great idea...however...

I just trailered my car for the first time. DAMN, that makes going to the track easy. Yes you need a tow vehicle and a spot to store the trailer. You can probably drop it in a storage tard for $100 a month, $3.00 a day. Why a cup of Starbucks costs at least that.

When I arrived at the track, the car was ready to go, totally prepared. That made it very easy.

I rented a trailer from a pal, complete with a tire rack and long ramps. I hope never to go to the track without a trailer...

this is why, even though my overweight open trailer (~3000lbs of heavy steel ) and going 50 mph on the highway i still prefer that over driving to the track w/ just the car.
