What is supporting the platform? Is it some kind of roof rack? Specific to your car, or universal?

I'm looking to concoct something similar, but since I have a Targa, there is no rack made for the car, but if I can find some kind of universal supports, I can build a platform to go on them. My windshield cross bar and the Targa bar could certainly support the weight.

Ed:

The platform is structural extruded aluminum framing. It's lightweight and strong.

I wonder in an A-B-X test if you could tell the difference between 30# and no 30# on the rear of an ~ 3600# AWD 996TT?

Ed,

I tow an 4'x4' trailer with my targa. It requires drilling some holes in the rear bumper behind the license plate, but it has served me well for a few years. The trailer is great since it allows me carry every thing I need (including tires, tools, jack, camping gear, 10x10 E-Z up tent, mtn bike) and still have room in the trunk to take the targa top off for the drive up

I'd be afraid that the "platform" would make a nice wing at speed and rip off the roofrack. The few folks I've seen with a roofrack and tires on them mount the tires vertically between the rack supports, like a trailers "tire rack". If I see you on the road, I'll be sure to stay in front to avoid any carnage when you realize you didn't tighten all that stuff down at the end of the weekend

Dragging up this old thread made me remember how much fun it was when CC was still around here.

Missed this thread first time around...

If I ever saw one of you guys driving down the highway somewhere, with a sweet 911 and a roof rack full of track tires, it would make my week. Just the pics are awesome, and gave me a huge smile.

Thanks!

With the tires off how much down force do you create?
