OG racing cage for club racing
 

I haven’t picked through the rulebook yet, but can anyone tell me if the 951 cage from OG racing is legal in PCA for the GT3 class.

John, no offense to OG Racing, but Kirk in Birmingham, Ala sells a cage for the 944 with NASCAR bars for $650. You would have to put in yourself or hire someone, but it's fairly easy. They advertise in Sportscar, the SCCA mag.

If you may run other venues (e.g. SCCA, NASA, etc.) check the rules carefully. My Safety Devices cage, though legal for PCA, isn't up to NASA standards without adding another bar..

Bill, do you have any contact info for Kirk? I like the idea of the NASCAR bars, I was actually going to have someone modify the OG cage with the sidebars.

Think about this...

Door bars are NOT the simple matter they appear to be on first glance. They are only as strong as what they attach too. If that is not very strong, door bars can be VERY DANGEROUS!!!!!!!!!

Try http://www.kirkracing.com It may take a second to upload but it works. As someone else mentioned, you should give the rulebook a very good read BEFORE ordering anything, e.g. NASA not only requires a specific diagonal support but it is the only group I'm aware of that requires a bar diameter of 1.75" and 12 gauge tubing for any car and driver combo weighing more than 3,000 lbs.

NASA takes 1.5'' DOM or chromoly cages for cars up to 3000 lbs without fuel or driver. A stock 951 should easily make that weight (not that I've seen them weigh anyone when they issue logbooks)

The issue with the diagonals with NASA is that they require at least one diaganal from one top corner of them main hoop to the opposite lower corner of the main hoop. Some of the cages such as the autopower have the diaganal going from above the drivers head to the rear passenger side mounting point near the rear wheel well.

Not sure what mods you have on your car to make it gt-3, but you may want to look into running 944 Super Cup if your boost levels and other mods aren't too high.

I don't think I'll be running with NASA anytime soon, PCA should be plenty when the time is right. I have too much done at this point to revert back to stock so NASA and 944 super cup series isn’t really an option with the current car. The problem is I enjoy the building and tweaking as much as I do the racing, and I don’t think I would be content running stock, although I’m sure I would be much more competitive. :)

Have you heard about the GTS Challenge? It's a NASA series which pits all German marques (BMW, Audi, VW, Mercedes and Porsche) against one another and assigns classes based on a weight to power ratio. This might be a better fit for you than spec racing.

John, when you said door bars are only as good as to what they are attached to, were you speaking about Kirk Cages? Or were you just speaking in general? I have a Kirk, is there something I need to know?

GTS challenge is a blast. We run with them in some 944 cup races - lots of different cars running at a variety of speeds, so there's always someone to race with.

Plus, with NASA you get 2 races per weekend, and they are typically a bunch cheaper than PCA (one race per weekend) club races.

Thanks for the info on the GTS challenge, this is the first I've heard about it. I've been looking for a HP to weight series, and that one looks like a load of fun. I'm definitely gona try it.

John, what DE run group are you currently in? When will you be going for your Club race license?

Yes the cage is PCA and SCCA legal. Beware of the Kirk - last one I saw did not bolt to the door sills, btu thre floor. The autopower suffers the same problem. Put your car on it's roof and you'll grow 4 feet!
