tow hooks

Anybody know where I find some "off the shelf" front and rear tow hooks for an '84 911 with stock bumpers? Anything that passes tech is probably OK with me. I understand somebody makes some kind of strap for the front? Also, I've looked at Autometrics rear hook, but it says it won't work with my more or less stock-like muffler. All leads appreciated.

Rennline.com makes a set for your car.

thanks, mark. have you seen the rennline tow hooks mounted on a car like mine with stock bumpers? the pictures they show on the webpage show aftermarket fiberglass bumpers. i have a call out to rennline to ask them, but thought you might know.

Sorry, Dave, I haven't seen them in person. Maybe there's a way to route or machine your stock bumpers.

James Achard 12-23-2004 02:51 PM

They require glass bumpers plus the rear one is in a vertical plane so it will bend and potentially break your glass bumper if you are towed out at an angle. I am working on some now which I can post a preliminary picture of this evening. They will work with stock bumpers.

Cheers, James

james,

great .... i look forward to seeing them. there should be a fair amount of interest since all the hooks i've seen so far either won't work with the stock bumpers or won't work with the stock muffler.

Dave, I have attached a 3D model picture of the tow hook I am in the process of designing. The hinge in the back has not been detailed out yet so this is just to get the idea across.

Cheers, James

James,

Very nice. Assume it mounts to the structural cross member behind the engine ... so I guess it extends through the back end below the center lense and above the bumper(?). Looks sturdy and I can see the hinge addresses the issue you mentioned earlier. How about the front? Then my question is when will they be ready and what's the cost?

I'm wondering what others in my position are doing to address this issue. I'm not the only one out there with stock bumpers. Or is everybody else planning to just take off the stock bumpers? And muffler? Anybody else out there in my position? I need to find a solution before early February.

I'm in the same boat, Dave. Jim's solution looks interesting.

I have been using the stock tow hooks that screw into the stock bumper (through the bumper cover). Is there a reason why you can't use them (or don't the earlier cars have them)?

dave morris 12-24-2004 02:49 PM

Unlike the 993 and maybe the 964, there are no stock tow hooks, as far as I know, for the earlier series 911s. Wish there were.

Dave, I used a set of 18" straps which I wrapped around the front torsion bar tubes. That is good enough for the front, as it really only gets side loading. For the rear, very important, I used the two factory tie down loops that are on the frame just behind the rear wheel wells. Trailered it that way for 10 years with no problems.

I just re-read the initial thread more carefully...Doh! :banghead:

Dave, thought that might be the case. 993 and 964 have the same system/hooks.

James Achard 12-24-2004 06:19 PM

Larry, I think Dave needs these for towing out of the kitty litter when he has a slight loss of talent(Not that this will happen!!)

Cheers, James

Thanks, Larry. Yeah, James is right. I'm looking for something to comply with the new Club Racing tow hook rule. On the front, I had hoped to get away with using the tie-downs back up under the bumper, but was told that won't be acceptable. Some kind of jury-rigged strap up front has, apparently, been used by others ... and I may end up going with that (does anybody have a picture of that set up?) if I can't find something better. Still need something like Autometric's hook for the rear ... but it has to address the fact that I have the stock aluminum bumper and a muffler that's close to stock.
