Sounds like the difference between winning a karate points match vs. a boxing match where one guy gets knocked out.

Didn't hf1 at one time got into a posting pissing match with the RL membership because he was playing bumper cars, similar to this Miata, and got busted with a 13/13?

I don't disagree. Two different things could be related -- rules and penalties definitely are. Nothing I wrote contradicts this.

I think hf1 was just lonely and wanted to talk.

OK, but a quick one. Don't want to make anyone jealous.

Bingo. So true. Lots of touching in his efforts to pass all those cars... + no fear of touching since no punishment. Makes you go faster.

Interesting to see the SCCA Spec Miata times vs the NASA Spec Miata times at recent events (within a couple weeks of each other) at the same track, same configuration. Top SCCA time 1:57.7. Top NASA time, 1:55.8 - by the driver of the car in the video.

That is interesting. Would be great to look at how other overlapping classes compared from the same weekends, but SM is really the best dataset because the fields are so large- there should be a good contingent of fast drivers in each group.

One other point- SM in NASA runs the Toyo tire, which is the SMT class in SCCA. Which would arguably make the noted time difference even worse, since the Hoosier in SCCA SM is supposed to be faster (when new anyway).

Could be track conditions, or the fast guys in SCCA only run Majors and the Hoosier Super Tour races?

RR vs SM7 should make the Hoosier faster. Temps would explain some of it. Dunno. That's weird.

I’m guessing it’s these two issues.

Couple of SCCA SM racer friends I sent the video to commented on how NASA SM is known for "inventive" car/engine prep and suspected that the guy's SM may have been somewhat "juiced up". They both pointed out his >7500rpm shifts shown on the video whereas the SM rev limit should be at 6950.
