997 GT3 questions

I have a new to me 997.1 GT3 which has been tracked some by the previous owner and has track pads / fluid / coolant lines pinned / alignment / corner balance / GT2 rear sway / DAS sport bar.

i need a seat - what is a good seat to use (not the GT2 seats - too much $$$ for now) for 6’3” 185, thin with long legs? Would probably prefer a Hans style seat.

If the rear wing is set for maximum downforce should I run a different splitter than stock - cup splitter?

is there an effective gurney flap for the stock 997.1 GT3 wing (currently set to max downforce)?

thanks

I wouldn't overthink the aero at this point and concentrate on your safety, the seat, harnesses and the roll bar. Best to check on the 997 forum to see what others have done in that regard and the airbags.

Agree with Frank, don't worry about aero for now.

Tall and slim, I would try the Recaro Pro Racer SPG (standard width) or Momo Daytona and Lesmo (1/2" narrower) seats.

Thanks for the seat suggestions. Not worried about the aero yet in any case. Just brainstorming at this point. I’m not going to change to a cup or RS wing so I’m thinking about simple tweaks.

We're the exact same height/weight and I have a 35" waist in jeans. I put the XL OMP HTE-R halo seat in my SPB and love it! Has the best shoulder support of all the halo seats I sat in. Could I of shoe-horned in to the non-XL?.. sure but the height was too low for the strap holes, halo and shoulder pockets. Even when I had it on sliders it fit in the tight space of the Boxster w/factory hardtop.

Awesome. I was just looking at that seat online but what a great recommendation from my body double. What brackets / mounts did you use?

There are a couple of threads on the 997 forum of track built GT3s, including my own, that should give you some ideas. I am 6'4 230lbs and have used the Recaro Profi SPG XL seat at first, and as the g-forces increased switched to the Recaro Pro HANS XL seat. I used a set of adjustable universal mounts, because neither seat would totally fit with the standard rails; but if you use the non-XL version it should not be a problem.

As for the car, you already addressed coolant pipes and the LSD is a must, as stock one is usually worn after a few days, and it makes quite the difference in driving dynamics. Otherwise the biggest weakness of this car from my experience is the front end grip. You should most definitely use the cup splitter as it is a $250 item that can be swapped in 5 mins or less. 991 Cup canards also help with the front end grip. I also found the front springs to be way too soft for track work, so getting a stiffer setup would help as well. Beyond those basic/inexpensive items, your imagination is the only limiting factor :)

Enjoy the car!

Just to throw more options at ya... I'm a big Racetech fan. In my last car I had RT4009 and loved it. In my current car I "upgraded" to the 4119. In retrospect, I don't think it's worth the difference, I'd probably go back to the 4009 if I were doing it over.
Both seats are awesome., I'm 6'4 230 l needed the wide/tall versions, you could probably get away with just the tall version.

I started with the BK mounts w/sliders i already had on there from my Sparco EVO II seat, It worked for a minute but I had to add to many big washers to take up the space between the seat shell and steel side mounts that really do not flex much when tightened down. When I decided to mount to the floor I went with the aluminum Planted offset universal side mounts that have a near infinite amount of mounting positions. https://www.stableenergies.com/Plant...TBK%2DAL%2DOS/

I used the BK floor mount with integrated sub-bar to get it bolted to the car. Again the adjustability factor with these as well (drill in hand) offers lots of choices but if I did it again I would get the version without the sub-bar and drill sub-strap eyelets in to the floor (relocate immobilizer) as the built in sub-bar limited me from going even lower in the side mounts. Still, it was 1/1/2" lower than with sliders.

A halo seat would be great unless you drive your car on the street. I think Sparco makes a seat with a removable halo system if you are driving your car on street. If it is a dedicated track car that is towed to the track, then you should try out as many seats as possible. Recaro, Racetech, Sparco, OMP, Cobra, etc., all make really great seats and they all fit differently. On my street cars, I had both a Recaro Pole Position and a Cobra, and the Cobra was much more comfortable. But in my dedicated track car, I have the Recaro P1300 and that seat just seems so secure. It makes the others feel flimsy and like a sofa.

Also, check with GMG and BBi as they have a number of seating brackets that are like plug and play, and they can assist with your airbag light when you remove the stock seat.

Good luck.

Thanks. If I do a halo seat it will be a swap for stock seats prior to trackdays and put it in the trailer. I want to keep the GT3 street-friendly. I realize that this is time consuming and not ideal but at present I have a 951 “race car” with full cage / mono balls / aero / built engine.

I’m hoping the seat swap is doable but maybe it’s unrealistic?

I’m vascillating between selling my 951 track car and tracking the GT3 and keeping the GT3 for street only. I need a new seat for the 951 so nothing lost if I end up not using the seat in the GT3. I won’t be able to make up my mind until I have tried the GT3 on track. :burnout:

i used OMP CUP seat with street slider and Brey-Krause brackets.
just sold the seat actually.

Use the race car for the track. Use the GT3 mostly on backroads and occasional track day. For that get the Euro 996 GT3 buckets that pop up for $3-4k occasionally here. Great street/track seats. Swapping seats in and out before/after trackdays will get old fast. Plus you will weaken the threads on whatever slider/seat nuts you (un)screw after a dozen of swaps.
